I had the same dilemma, always wanted a little bit more/different multitool features, so I modified my TTI. Take a look here: https://forum.multitool.org/index.php?topic=70364.msg1415009#msg1415009
The perfect MT ?...there isn't one. Lol On a side note, I think it's best to have two separate tools on you anyhow, so many times I've tried to undo a fastener only to have the other end of it turn too.
I'm low maintenance... Give me a Victorinox Compact but replace the crock screw and parcel hook with a phillips driver and I'd be happy.
yeah, @earthman's point on needing two tools for a given fastener is a good one, and a big part of why I was so attracted to the Spyderco Spyderrench/Byrdrench (and regret not buying one --- still need to work out some suitably compact adjustable wrench option for my EDC).
I've pondered this one quite a bit. Perfect would be one with solid pliers and end user customization in its intent. I'd have scissors, blade, pry bar, and a proper full size 1/4 hex bit socket.
This turned out to be a breaking point for my EDC for sure, when I need to be able to grip both a nut and bolt I need 2 tools! So it is simple for me to just carry a Pocket Wrench with my Spirit all the time. The Pocket Wrench is so slim it does not get in the way but it is a beast at holding nuts when I need to!
I carry both a Pocket Wrench and a LM Blast. Just never thought to carry the Pocket Wrench in the same sheath. Great idea! Thanks for the inspiration! Moshe ben David
Size of a Juice for me. They could remove the saw and chisel and get it to 5oz. That would be amazing.
A Leatherman Wave with better blade steel (Sandvik 12C27 or good old 154 CM), a Victorinox style bottle opener/driver combo tool instead of the large screw driver, a Victorinox Swiss Tool style "crate opener"/mini pry bar instead of the scissors and a decent awl instead of the small bit driver would have been perfect.
My perfect edc multi tool A wave with Sak quality Ti scales : S30v Blade (Outside) Scissors ( Outside ) Saw (outside) Serated blade with a 40 degree angle w seatbelt cutter ( Outside ) Inside Leftside: Bottle opener w flathead Big flathead Extended Phillips Extended flathead Inside Right : Sak Chissle/scraper Awl with hole ( Not that i use it often but id like to have one then not ) Rough/Diamond file Can opener w small flathead To me that would be the perfect multi tool.... But i know it will never happen
I'd like a full size MT with some good wire stripping options (Electrician) an outside blade, and a pocket clip.
I've never had the chance to handle a Surge, what do you like about the pliers? I thought that the Swisstool's were pretty much perfect, what am I missing?? There have been two versions of Surge haven't there? You talking about the latest one?
I love the Surge pliers. They work well in my hands for fairly fine manipulation of small objects all the way up to budging any stuck fastener I can get the inner serrated jaws on. The cutters on mine will slice paper cleanly and also go through fence wire with some effort. Having owned a bunch of different brands of multitool the pliers on the Surge and the ST300 are my favorite. (Signed, unabashed Leatherman fanboy)
My perfect multi tool is definitely a Leatherman SuperTool 300. That thing has bailed my out of crap way too many times to count, and has always been reliable.
