I'm heading down to Topsail Island for vacation next Tuesday, and I can't figure out what knives to bring with me. It's a problem I have whenever I go away somewhere, so I figured I will take the decision out of my hands, and leave it up to everyone else. I'm thinking up to two folders, but I can be comfy with just one. Monday night I'll tally up which knife or knives got the most votes, and I'll pack them up. I'll also try to take some photos of the knives in use, so we can see how they do. I don't forsee any hard usage, mostly kitchen duties, cutting limes, and maybe a little whittling. Now, on to the knives:

    Spyderco
    1. Delica 4 FFG-2
    2. Rookie
    3. Lava
    4. Para 2-4
    5. Dragonfly (SE)

    Buck
    1. 110 Folding hunter-1
    2. 501 Squire
    3. 055 Mini Folding hunter-1

Case Small Amber Bone Texas Jack-2

    Opinel No. 8 Gardener-1

    Victorinox
    1. Alox Pioneer-2
    2. Super Tinker-7

A.G. Russell Hunter Scalpel (Okay, it's not a folder, but it's super small and easy to carry.)

And that's pretty much all my folders.

So, what say you? What will be coming with me on vacation?

Last month I had the same decision to make when I flew down to Key West for a family vacation. Scine we were not checking any bags, just traveling light with carry on, I mailed one knife down to take care of everything while I was there. Fishing, picnic, odds and ends and trimming the ends of fine cigars. I picked a Victorinox recruit to mail down to myself where I was staying, and gave it to the grounds keeper the morning I left. The SAK did everything that was needed from slicing limes to go in cold gin and tonics to cutting bait. The grounds keeper, a hard working cuban guy, was blown away by the sudden gift of the SAK.

So, should I consider that a vote for the Pioneer or the Super Tinker?;-)

When travelling I try to bring the most utility in the least offensive package.

You didn't say if you were driving or flying. It could make a difference. Flying, I wouldn't trust the TSA gons with my luggage, so I actually went out and bought a 14.95 recruit just for the one way trip it was to take to Key West. I new I was not going to bother mailing it back to myself, so I wanted what was for all purposes, a disposable knife with a good amount of utility.

If your driving, the choices may differ.

I would be perfectly happy with the Super Tinker and Opinel (I always like to have 2 knives with me). Either should handle the tasks you listed, plus you aren't out of much money if you lose one. If I thought I might need something a little beefier, I would probably change out the Opinel for the Buck 110.

We're driving down there, so no worries about sticky fingered TSA agents.

Oh, so then I'd make it the super tinker and the heck with anything else. Can't beat a SAK for out and out utility. Plus it's public friendly.

Pioneer for the multi tool aspect, then Buck 55 or Dragonfly for main blade usage.

You don't offer many details on how you're planning to spend your vacation, so I guess I'll just try to cover as many bases as possible for you:

    • Buck 110 for any serious knife work
    • Super Tinker for anything else

Go for the Para 2 for in case you need to do something heavy duty, and then super-tinker all the way for a multi.

Well, it looks like the Para2 and Super Tinker will be accompanying me this week. Thanks for the suggestions everyone. This was fun:).
