G shocks being tacky is a matter of opinion. I think they look nice when the people wearing them are well dressed and well groomed. I personally feel shiny watches look a but off with a dark suit. That being said, I also think most jewelry like big earrings, or broaches are extremely tacky. Sent from my tricorder using Tapatalk 1701
I wish people would stop talking as though this were the only G-Shock model. There are thousands of different models and variations of models, some of them very smart.
To me G-Shock is either tacticool or trendy hip hop. Neither is traditional or formal. However you could wear one with a tux if that's your style...
Well they do target the trendy hip hop crowd but that only accounts for part of their G-Shock line up. As for tacticool, I think this kind of toughness in a wristwatch is more practicool. A few non-plastic G-Shocks for anyone still not aware of them:
what is that first one? that looks awesome! but to be fair, when people think of Gshocks, this is not what comes to mind
That's a MRG-121. The MR-G, MTM and Giez are three lines of G-Shocks aimed at 'grown up' males willing to spend more than £20 on a watch.
I don't know, but I'd guess around 200 USD for the steel version and double that for the titanium in new condition. I don't know if that one's still in shops.
I wasn't aware of this line of G-Shock, however still is more tacticool "practicool" than sophisticated or formal. I personally wouldn't wear this with a suit...
Seems the question is really two questions -- 1) would you wear a watch that traditionally would be considered too casual or inappropriate for a formal event, and 2) would you specifically wear a Casio? Personally I'm yes on one and no on two. After destroying and scratching the heck out of many Casios, I now wear only metal dive or sports watches with sapphire windows. Plus, I've become more of a dive watch person. The same watch on a mountain or in the water, or at an event. If people think it's gauche, well, I don't care. As for respecting the event, well, I don't care about the respect of someone who would base their understanding of my respect on such a thing. -john
No. But then again, I wouldn't wear a Casio at all. Just not my thing, don't like the brand. And even if the question really is "Would you wear a black plastic watch to a formal occasion," it's still a "no" for me. I've got some decent stainless steel watches, stainless bands, and even some of those I wouldn't wear to a formal occasion.
Great watch. I have the non atomic/solar version and find it one of the most comfortable watches I've worn.
