What guidelines do you use to decide whether a wound will require stitches?

If I can see bone, if I can't get it to stop bleeding, if it is in an area I can't reach.

The woods are lovely, dark and deep.
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.

I usually decide by how deep/long, or if it is in an area that will continue to re-open (like a knuckle)

Echo2 gave me a couple of suture kits awhile back and to be honest... I'm not sure if I could. It's weird, I've had so many injections in my life I don't even blink when someone comes at me with a hypo, but a sewing needle... blerg. Maybe it's because I always got the creepy crawlies at the thought of getting a fishing hook stuck past the barb and having to push it all the way out the other side to clip it off. :frantic:

And also... I've closed two cuts I was told that needed stitches with butterflys... and I think they healed better than they would have with stitches. At least there was less scarring.

I've done it. When asked "Don't it hurt!?!" I replied "it already hurts!"

I don't condone it because some people don't have/use the same level of common sense that I do, but its not all that bad. I have a few kits left myself. (I've been told they expire, IIRC:eek:) Mine are 15 yrs old at least. I think I'l reserve them for DEEP cuts. Only used it that once. Only opportunity I ever had to sew up something and have two hands free. Usually the cut is on one hand or the other:D

If suture kits contained single-serve packets of Wild Turkey, I'd have no problem giving myself stitches.

Location is important as well. Sometimes it is difficult to keep the skin closed and a couple sutures make life much easier.

Tru dat. I had a recent cut on the side of my thumb, along the nail, that would't stay shut. I thought it may need stitches so I had it checked. Turns out stitches were a no go because of the location. Compression and a bandage so big I couldn't use that thumb was required:p

I've stitched myself and some friends but I wouldn't recommend doing it without some antibiotics for a week or so. It doesn't hurt and I've stitched both my hands, my leg when I was learning how, and my arm. Superglue is the way to go but don't make the mistake of using gorilla glue.

if you see things that are UNDER your skin, get it done by a pro/paramedic/doctor.
everything else gets disinfected, superglued and protected by ducktape ;)
