By far, the best jacket I have ever owned is Arcteryx Veilance Quoin Jacket. Solid made in Canada wear. It isn't cheap, but it does suit everything the OP talked about.

I don't have a perfect all around jacket, because I prefer to have different jackets to suit a particular purpose. If I'm going to something formal or to church, I'll wear a nice wool peacoat that's dressy. If I'm going out where casual wear is needed, then I'll wear one of my leather jackets that will match with what I'm wearing. If I'm going outside in the rain or snow or walking the dogs in those conditions, then I'll wear one of my goretex parkas. The list goes on and on. Therefore, I have a variety of jackets to suit the occasion.

I used to have an all around jacket, but it just doesn't didn't seem to fit in all situations. Someone taught me once the old saying "jack of all trades, but master of none". Therefore, I don't have a perfect jacket, but what I do have are perfect jackets that will fit each occasion.

Barbour beaufort. In the new non wax fabric. Cross between a mac - barn coat & windbreaker. Light, packs small , will do in the woods or the office.

Surprisingly it has a kind of soft buttery feel, too. I would have thought it would dry out, malraux72.

I have quite a few jackets. My present (well, as of last year) go to jacket, is my Icebreaker MerinoLOFT Stratus.

Pulled the trigger on a Kuhl Burr at REI garage just in time for the weather changing.

I also have found that if I add a light pile jacket under my leather coat I can increase its uefulness to four seasons.

Well, for me, for 9 months of the year when it's <18c here, I like my Barbour wax jacket. Useful pockets (inc. lined ones), great hood and in general great fit. Windproof, waterproof, quiet (compared to crinkle synthetics), warm, and smart enough to wear in the city. Only downside is it don't breath too well, if you start overheating your only choice is to strip off.

Huge wax cotton fan here. Is the jacket quilted inside ?

Yes, quilted on the arms and lower portion of torso. Upper half and inner hood is fleece pile lined. If it had pit zips and the wallet pocket on the zip-line (as I remember the classic Barbours having) it'd be near perfect.

Filson Double Mackinaw from the classifieds of BushcraftUSA. ~$140
Very warm jacket, maybe to warm for the South's winter weather.

I think so too. Might be a little warm for Alabama.

I'm a hot-natured person, even in the winter time, so it's all about easy layering for me.

For much of Fall, my go-to right now is a Mountain Hardwear Strecker Lite Jacket, with a Hawke & Co. packable lightweight down vest or full sleeve over it. If I get more chilled can throw a t-shirt under it all, or a soft shell over it. If I get hot, off comes the packable vest/jacket and I'm still feeling good. The packable vest or jacket is awesome, as it packs down into its own pocket small enough to throw in my backpack.

If I had to pick one jacket it would be my Arcteryx Gamma MX Hoody. For layering in colder weather I really like throwing either my Uniqlo Down Parka or EMS Downtek Jacket underneath it.

Cold weather I mostly wear a Navy Pea coat which my high school girlfriend insisted I wear one cold night. Otherwise, an A2 which came from my Father's estate. An old safari jacket for bicycle riding (it had a bad encounter w/ acid when working on my MGB... so not suitable otherwise) --- though I'm bummed not to've found out about the limited edition Criterion jacket which Brooks (the bicycle folks) did recently. Hoping that a new safari jacket I just ordered from Gentleman's Emporium will just work for everything though (my son has claimed the A2, and wants the Pea coat).

Still regretting not buying a kangaroo leather jacket when I had the chance a long while ago, or the Filson tin cloth jacket which would pass as a dress coat, and finally got around to replacing a black BDU shirt I'd wear as a jacket which was stolen out of the laundry.
