I'm thinking about getting a new knife. I usually just use the one on my multitool, but I'm thinking about getting a dedicated knife. I've boiled it down to two choices. They're about the same size and both under $100.00. I actually really like the SOG because the pocket clip allows for deep pocket carry. I'm ambivalent about the assisted open. I otherwise like the Spyderco. What do you think?
OK I will give it to you straight.... SOG = blade play . Blade play is do to sloppy lock engagement...not good. ANYTHNG from Spyderco or Benchmade will be better than a SOG.
Get a Delica with a deep carry clip. Problem solves and everyone in this thread is happy! You can get deep carry clips pretty easy.
Other great choice would be Manix 2 with G10 and CPM S30V. They go for around $80 maybe less. Good steel and Axis like locking system.
Can't go wrong with a Delica. Also consider a Benchmade Mini-Grip, both are great knives and you would be hard pressed to find something better at that price.
I'd say Delica or a BM product. I've never been a fan of SOG, either. Their knives feel.... sloppy. just my opinion.... Or, an Izula.
Spyderco hands down. All the SOG knives I've handled had a lot of side to side play. I also prefer a thumb hole over a stud. If you want a deep carry clip, you'll have no problem finding one online. EDIT: I'd highly recommend you get the FFG Delica. It will slice much better.
Delica for sure of the 2 you suggest. So light you may forget it is there but strong enough to not really worry about too. If you want a bigger, fatter grip then the Mini or full size Griptillian is though to beat for the price as well.
If you contact Spyderco directly you can order them for most models or check for aftermarket ones on the popular auction site. Same goes for Benchmade.
I own one sog... snarl to be exact. I bought it cause I love brous designs but don't want to spend the cash. I have to agree with the guys better off spyderco or benchmade.. In the long run you'll be way pleased with the results
I would have to agree with the Mini Grip. It is my go to work knife (cutting cord, boxes, wire ties, electrical wire). I've even used the thing to pry a piece of plywood that was loose that I couldn't get a grip on (not suggested, of course). Beautiful knife, and it can take a beating. The Kidd
Ditch the SOG idea. They are not well built knives... sorry, they just aren't. You'd be far better served by a Mini Grip or Delica for sure. But let me throw into the mix another option... the Cold Steel Mini Recon 1. It's available in Clip Point, Tanto or Spear Point and comes with the indomitable Andrew Demko TriAd Lock--the toughest/stoutest/strongest lock in the knife industry and one that is smooth in operation and locks up like a bank vault!!! Now, traditionally the Mini Recon 1 comes with AUS8A steel, which is a good EDC steel and I actually prefer it to the Delica's VG10 (VG10 rolls so easily and is such a finger print magnet it makes me OCD)... the Mini Grip's 154CM is better than both though IMO (154CM is a great EDC steel, really). BUT... check this out... Cold Steel is currently in the process of upgrading the steels they are using and will soon be offering the Mini Recon 1 in CTS-XHP, which is a fantastic steel and while you will pay a bit of a premium for the new XHP version (it will probably come in just under $100 street price). You can still find the AUS8A versions out there for sale though for about $50 give or take. The AUS8A versions have a cheap black teflon coating that, frankly, stinks... but it can be easily removed with some steel wool, leaving an absolute beautiful stonewash underneath. The XHP versions have an upgraded DLC coating... and while it will be way more durable than the old teflon coating, it also won't be easily removed. If you are like me and don't care as much for black blades, then the addition of DLC to the line (which would have to be considered an upgrade) isn't something to get excited about because your stuck with a black blade. All that said (whew!)... in the 3" EDC blade world its gonna be dang tough to buy a better all around knife than the Mini Recon 1... fantastic steel, unbeatable lock and priced right. Unless you just don't like backlocks or just don't like Lynn Thompson! HA!
