So I am looking to get back into a .45 ACP. I had a few 1911's and a S&W 645 long ago but I miss shooting that big old round. So I am torn now between a Glock 21 or a XD 4″ Full Size .45ACP. I can get a military discount on either one. I already have a Glock 19 so I am familiar with the brand. But to be honest, I am not a fan of the Glock triggers.

If I were to get another .45 I’d save my pennies and get an H&K USP Compact.

I actually shoot the M&P line better than I do the HK or Glocks that I own or have owned for some reason?

The HK is certainly a finer weapon on most levels but is just not as fine for me.

If I were you, I would go to a local range an rent a Springfield. Then purchase it, if it meets your parameters. I know several people who own these Croatian imports, and love-them. My brother has the .45 ACP, and carries-it all the time as an EDC weapon. The XDS is now available in the 10mm caliber, so I'm looking into one myself. This is about the best 'advice' I can offer you. Other than that, there are a number of after-market trigger connectors for the Glock you can install.

With the G19 you currently have and available discounts, I would think the G21 would fit into your rotation well.

I love shooting steel with my G21.3!

Definitely rent as many as you can; you might find something you never knew to look for! I had an XD-45 and XDm-45 for several years and they're great guns. I never could get on board with the Glock grip angle.

    Also check out: S&W M&P-45 (2.0), FN FNX-45, Sig P320/P220/P227, Beretta PX-4 Storm, Ruger American, HK45

What about a full size Smith and Wesson M&P? Love the fit and feel of the gun.

The XD line leaves me a bit cold. There's nothing wrong with them, but I don't like the feel of them. I like Glocks, but if the trigger bothers you, you may want to look elsewhere.

I'd never go back to 1911s after shooting a G30. I have almost 3,000 rounds through the thing. Even enjoy the 10 mm conversion, Been reliable in the chest rig through the PAC NW and Alaska.

I have the M&P 45 compact. Same dimensions as a G19. Why would you want an xd or any springfield striker fired handgun that has a grip safety......

You might consider a Glock 30, and don't forget the 21 and 30 are available in the "SF" model.

The 30, although not diminutive, is reasonably small enough to conceal although admittedly back when I looked like a P90X model I could IWB anything even a G21 (which I have). I liked the 30 and qualified with one although I never owned nor was issued one. Other options include not only a 30SF but also a 30S.

If you're just shooting for entertainment value with no other application for the pistol then I don't think it matters.

What are you using it for?
For occasional target shooting and recreational use, 1911s top my list. There's just something about them..
Serious competition like IPSC, although being a 45 that's probably not the case, I'd get a 2011, assuming your wallet is prepared to get a good one.
Self defense isn't a thing around here, so I don't know much about it, but I think (from absolutely no experience) that if I was to get a .45 that should be dependable as well as fun to shoot and still have enough qualities to get me excited about it, I would seriously consider Civilians suggestion to get a SIG 220. If 1911s didn't exist, that's probably the .45 I would own today.

You could also look at the H&K HK45, less than the USP but still a great .45. I personally don't like Glock, tried one once, that was enough, sold it for the biggest loss I've ever taken, but just glad to get rid of it. Springfield XDe would also be a good choice for a small .45, extremely light recoil.

I don't own one but have shot a Sig 220 SAO and it was terrific, single action without the issues associated with a 1911

H&K makes solid reliable handguns. The USP line while top end unless you go for the expert it isn't very accurate, at least not for a target pistol. Certainly good for center mass, the 9mm is of my primary carry pistols. For a .45 I'd go with the HK45, very reliable accurate and like all H&K's built like a tank. Also it will save you in the neighborhood of $300

I own an M&P full-size .45 ACP. I used to compete with it and did quite well. Now it has a place of honor in my bedside pistol safe, with a Streamlight TLR-1 and a magazine full of 230gr Gold Dot.
