A loose key is a great place for a button compass.

A 14mm SERE compass fits perfectly in a Hillman "Zero Gravity" key. Just drill a couple of notches for an O-ring. It's very secure, easily removable, and does not compromise using the key for its intended purpose. The aluminum key does not interfere with the magnetism and the compass works great right where it is.
