So I got two new knives... one is D2, the other 1095. Both have a black coating on the blade, but both companies recommend putting a light layer of oil on the blade. What should I use?
Any oil will do, don't worry about being food safe. If your using enough oil to poison your food, your using way to much oil.
I've heard some vegetable oils can go rancid if you use them on your knives and leave them alone for a while, but I guess it could work in a pinch.
The other thing about mineral oil besides being food safe is that it has very little taste - it doesn't take much oil to be able to taste it if you're putting it on the blade and running it through food. It's also cheap and works really well and doesn't go bad. Pick some up at a drugstore. Vegetable oils or olive oil can definitely go rancid.
I use Tuf-cloth. I don't believe it is food safe. Others have mentioned how expensive it is, but I personally don't find it to be too bad (I haven't compared with other similar products though). The cloth lasts for quite a while if you keep it sealed, I bought two early this year and have yet to see the first one dry out. IMO, it's worth it.
I love my Tuf Cloth. I use it on guns, knives and multitools. I haven't been worrying about whether or not it's food safe; I just wipe the blade well with a clean cloth before I use it to cut food. My second choice would be Breakfree CLP. That stuff is great. It will tend to attract more gunk than a Tuf Cloth or Tuf-Glide will. I carry both a (new and unused) Tuf Cloth and a bottle of Breakfree CLP in my BOB.
I have a mini nitrous stryker in D2. I use Rem-Dri. You spray it on and wait for it to turn white, then buff with a cloth until clear. Kinda like waxing a car. It works so well, I've starting using it on all my blades, even the stainless ones. I haven't had one speck of rust since I started using it, even on my carbon Mora. I typically do them once a month or so, but I live in a tropical climate.
I have thought about Tuf-cloth... are there any retail stores that sell it? As for Rem-dry, maybe I'll try that too. anyone else?
I use a Tuf-Cloth. It works well, it takes gunk off a blade fast as ever (stupid packing tape). Most cutlery stores will sell them, some outdoors stores as well. If you look at Benchmade/Spyderco's dealer finder....odds are they carry Tuf-Cloth. From their PDF: http://www.sentrysolutions.com/docs/Tuf-Cloth_Tuf-Glide_Manual.pdf Can I use my TUF-CLOTH treated knife to cut food? TUF-CLOTH's dry bonded protection is non-toxic. The bonding reduces any transfer to food items cut. If you plan TUF-CLOTH and to cut food with a TUF-CLOTH treated blade, we suggest that you wash or wipe the blade first, and then reapply when convenient. Great product, about 10 bucks, but honestly a steal when you realize how well it works. I use it on my D2 Benchmade Apperation...so far so good. I use it on everything from A-2 all the way up to S30v
Sorry to take over here, but my leatherman s3 is starting to get wierd rust specs from the last time I was camping, is there a good way to clean these off? than to clean/oil to prevent this in the future?
:iagree: :iagree: :iagree: great for knives and firearms, when the cloths dry out, you can apply mineral spirits, they will last for years
O0+1 for Tuf-Cloth. I used it on a Benchmade 975S I bought ten years ago, This knife has a bead blasted finish notorious for developing rust. So far, no rust.
