Every year i attempt to learn something new--something totally unrelated to what daily life may require---

    For example:
one year I taught myself how to juggle---
the next year I taught myself how to assemble a mechanical watch from parts--

This year I am going to try to teach myself how to code--at least ways the coding process, and maybe figure out how to get a computer to do something that I want it to do---through code?

I don't always succeed--last year I tried to learn lock-picking but I could never make a lock open with picks no matter how hard i tried or how long I practiced...so succeeding to me is not the point--
the concept is to never stop learning---

What have you learned or are studying purely for the enjoyment of either the subject or for the pure enjoyment of learning something new??????

Linux. Though not for pure (or any kind of) enjoyment, it's for work.

My wife and I are considering learning sign language...

No one deaf in the family, just to be able to talk to each other without others eavesdropping.

    :D

The bettering of one's self by learning new things or acquiring a new skill is admirable.

While not incredibly lofty goals, I taught myself how to ride a unicycle last year. Now I'm learning some tricks with a yoyo. If nothing else, I can amuse my kids with those skills.

Fire building/starting. I'm also working on getting some of the basic knots down. I also decided last weekend that I should add the most basic of sewing skills to my repertoire. Sewing a button.

Over the last few years I've picked up and put down learning Persian/Farsi. I've wanted to travel to Iran for the past 4 or 5 years, partly after a random encounter at a zoo, and when I do I'd like to be able to speak the basics. Seeing as the word for 'egg' is stuck in my head, I'll have a hope of survival at least.

I pretty much do only that. I jump from hobbies to hobbies so I have to learn a lot of stuff about it.
I've done guitar making 4 years ago, guitar playing 6 years ago, amplifier making 5 years ago, knife making a few months back, mechanics a year ago, coding while in highschool (C and HTML), keyboard training (how to type faster, pretty usefull these days), how to shoot last year (olympic rifle 50m), and my best so far : to learn english. I taught myself because I wanted to
This year I'm thinking of learning how to fix bicycles, continue knife making and heat treating, and I want to learn how to keep a hobby for more than a year

Great idea! For around $100 you can walk into most flight schools and ask for an introductory flight. You'll meet with a flight instructor, do a preflight walkaround of an aircraft, then go on about a 30 minute flight where most times you'll do the takeoff and actual flying of the aircraft while the instructor talks you through it.

Plan the flight for dawn or dusk when the temperatures are moderate, the sky is pretty, and the air is smooth.

There's no obligation to continue lessons unless you want to, and if nothing else, you'll have a great experience under your belt.

Let us know if you do it, and feel free to PM me with any questions!

I want to get better at lock picking, and I'd love to actually be a guitarist again.
