If you have a religious objection to products of China stop now. This is a product of China. I always buy US products when one of equal quality and somewhat near price is available. But there are times when there is no US product available. Or when the overall deal is to good to pass up. Read my review, do your own research make your own decision.
For the record I drive a Dodge pickup. My tires are US made. My firearm manufacture of choice is Ruger. I go US made for the big things and do what I can on the small ones.
And now the review ....... Outdoor Fixed Blade Knife 7 Overall WITH FIRE STARTER
Uploaded with ImageShack.com
I read what I will call feedback (not a full review) on this product in another post and it caught my attention. It was not favorable but some of the points caught me. And it was available on Amazon Prime. Yes, I am a prime member. So I went to Amazon to check it out further.
I usually find the reviews useful so I read those first. DO NOT go by these reviews. This is the one time I have been totally at the other end of the stick of everyone else. I think it has to do with expectations. I think everyone was expecting a good size tactical knife with a Maxpedition like sheath ......... for under $7. It is so not.
What it is is a very nice small (see product link above for specs) knife with a very nice fire starter and a ok sheath.
The knife - Full tang black with a OD green nylon cord (not para cord) wrap on the handle. The wrap on the handle is far from tight but serviceable and if I had more, “getup and go” I would rewrap it in paracord. Since what I have is “sit down and have another cold drink” it will have to live with what it has.
If I get another one to hide in the bottom of my wife’s purse I will rewrap the handle. You could hide a small Asian village in the bottom of my wife’s purse. My thoery is if there is a S.H.T.F. like event and she is stuck somewhere, at some point she will dig down to the bottom of here purse looking for mints or gum or some crap like that and find some useful goodies I have placed there for her.
The steel is a nice thick stainless steel. Much thicker than I thought it would be. I don’t know the type of stainless (and for under $7 I don’t care). It came with a nice sharp edge, but I gave it a few licks just to bring it up a bit more (and because I could). The edge is probably a product of the skill of the underpaid 7 year old that actually finished my knife so your mileage may vary.
The sheath is OD green in a thin cheap nylon that I have only found on knock off products out of China. But it gets the job done, and I had a need for a light weight sheath. So for me this works out. There is a small pocket on the front meant for the fire starter, but I will use it for something else as I have reassigned the fire starter to my SAK setup and I want a slimier profile for this knife/sheath setup.
The fire starter is very good. A nice size for use and a nice size to include in several kits or setups. And it throws more sparks than a cutoff grinder. At this price you could think of it as a $7 fire starter that comes with a free knife.
In conclusion - This is not a big knife, this is not a knife you can brag about or impress you friends with. But it is a solid little knife that will do a days work and be there the next morning. It will never be my only EDC knife, but I EDC 4 knives on an average day. I may add this as knife #5. At first I thought I might use it as a neck knife, but now I am leaning toward a boot knife.
Just ordered a second one for the bottom of my wife’s purse and a third one for (I don’t know why).
