Damasteel sure makes for sweet eyecandy but it is an automatic + $329 to the $500 base price and not for me on something I'm going to use.
THAT much? Wow. That's an enormous jump up. I'd never seen this particular style of Damascus, so it caught my eye. But yeah... I'll pass if it's more than 50% of the original price to get it!
I've seen on a knife topic in a different forum, tremendous love for the cheaper Chinese knives that are still made rather well. And I get it--a company like Ganzo has put out some really decent knives. I've got a few, mostly for the novelty of design and for situations where cosmetic wear would be likely. From all I've bought, I must say the Ganzo 707 is a real gem. Automatic & super rugged, with nice touches, for the price. But I'd never carry one as an EDC. Too heavy, plus the legal compliance thing. Yes, a sharp consistent edge out of the box is mandatory, and if a company can't manage that then I'd also abandon them. I'm definitely at the point now where I've got all the knives I'll need for the foreseeable future. The Nomad was that very specific EDC knife I'd been looking for (low profile minimalist design with S35VN or better steel). In that forum I mentioned about, I was practically mocked for buying the Asher Nomad, when I could have "spent less for a very comparable Sanrenmu Land." They just didn't get it, despite citing my specific requirements. About the Cold Steel, I'd been eyeing the AD10... although I really don't need it right now. My plan is that when I end up living in more rural circumstances, I'd pick up one. Bummer that you experienced a tough problem with the Tri-Ad lock. No lube could smooth it out reasonably well? Even with loosening the pivot point?
re: the Cold Steel I returned. Didn't even try. Once I experienced how stiff it was I as fed up. Plus I took another look at buyer comments and saw at least for that model -- I was hardly the only one complaining. Not worth the trouble! Just a thought for when you 'go rural'.... how about getting a Buck 110? Base models are about $50 and widely available; been around forever; and many hunters still swear by them. I'll admit it -- although I'm just a suburban guy and have NEVER hunted (and not inclined to; not an 'animal rights' issue or any of that; just not my thing) -- I have several versions of the Buck 110 and a 112; wear them openly in a sheath (not seemingly an issue where I live). Excuse the clutter this is my work bench.. AD10 is easily my smoothest Cold Steel, only ones I have that were too stiff was the Tuff lite, and the Broken Skull, pretty easy fix though. Good stuff for the cost Have two AD10s both are the same, easy to manipulate
@xevious, @ccwaters, and anyone else who read my Cold Steel comments above about a Cold Steel that I ended up returning because of the lock stiffness.... This happened over a year ago by the way... so it may well not be indicative of current production. The knife in question was a Cold Steel Holdout; I 'think' it was a Holdout III but to be honest I don't remember nor do I remember is it was a PE or a SE... It also appears the Holdout series is no more? At least BHQ do not seem to carry it... I do still have a few CS knives in my collection: Tuff Lite in both PE and SE; Micro Recon Tanto PE; Micro Recon Spearpoint PE. These 4 are so small that 'even' I can work the Tri-Ad I keep contemplating getting something a bit larger...just not buying many knives these days... Am Yisrael Chai! Moshe ben David
Four of my eight are older production XHP models, wanting to pick up more in XHP soon as I can find them. I'm sure bad ones happen, just like any other company. Heck, I had six Spyderco S45vn PM2 sprints and five of them had horrible lock stick, one was so bad it could only be unlocked via a screwdriver, also most of them were way off center. Then the two purple DLT cruwears I just got are perfect, Monday vs. Friday?
Not the best pic by Seller but I’ll take better ones later this week after it arrives. And.......I returned it. Blade was way off center and could be moved by hand.
I'm on a Boker trip at the moment. My last one was a Kalashnikov XXL and I just ordered a Kalashnikov OTF. Both with D2 steel. Very basic but interesting knives.
Just got a message that my Dragonfly 2 k390 have been shipped from Knifecentre from my S-A-M-S-U-N-G S9+ via T-A-P-A-T-A-L-K
