I searched and couldn't find a similar thread, so please forgive me if this is a dupe. What do you keep in your edc backpack, satchel, messenger bag, etc. I just bought a backpack and am looking for ideas of what to put in it, as I will be using it for my first edc backpack. Thank you ahead of time for your help. :D

I'll post a pic tomorrow, but here's the list of what's currently in my flight bag (511 Rush Delivery Lima) in no particular order:

Parker Jotter with Fischer space pen refill, highlighter, Sharpie, dry erase marker, Gerber Diesel MT, 7-in-1 screwdriver, red Photon keychain light, foamie earplugs, folder with all my flight documents, water bottle, tin of Altoids, Afrin, no-doz, Motrin, Purell, tissues, chapstick, floss picks, cough drops, BIC lighter, micro USB cord, 2.1 amp USB wall charger, Canon ELPH 330 HS and charger, 3.5mm audio cord, JVC Marshmallow headphones, Bose QC15 headphones, flight gloves, ratty old ballcap, fixed blade 7" knife with firestarter, Electric Charge sunglasses with case, and earmuffs. I've got a Preon 2, microfiber cloth and Kershaw Burst in the mail, too.

I know I'm forgetting some things. Also, I have room for my 15.6" laptop, charger, 16GB USB 3.0 thumbdrive, Nexus 7, Kindle, USB OTG cable and WD Passport external HDD for those long flights. And for those middle of the night and 8+ hour flights where I have to sleep, I have room on the outside for a self-inflating mattress and pillow.

Got a few more things I want to add, so I might update when I get some more things in there.

    EDIT: Took some pics

I would like to hear and see not only the "what" you carry, but why you carry it. If its your work bag, what kind of work do you do? We all know that Mission drives the gear train, so what is your mission?

Good idea, I'm curious to see what other people do every day with their stuff. Here's mine:

Parker Jotter with Fischer space pen refill - writing at weird angles in the plane
highlighter - highlighting applicable METAR, TAF and NOTAM (weather and airport info) lines for my flight time
    Sharpie - just cause
dry erase marker - i do a good amount of writing on the board in the wardroom at my squadron
Gerber Diesel MT and 7-in-1 screwdriver - for little repairs
red Photon keychain light - to see in the cockpit at night without destroying my night vision
foamie earplugs and earmuffs -because I don't want to be deaf from jet noise before I turn 30
folder with all my flight documents, water bottle, Motrin, chapstick, cough drops - should be obvious
tin of Altoids and floss picks - hard to brush your teeth onboard, and I don't like gum
Afrin - in case my sinuses get clogged with the cabin pressure changes
no-doz - lots of long and overnight flights on deployment
Purell - can't wash my hands before eating, and I don't know who's been touching the yoke. Actually, I do, all the more reason...
tissues - gotta blow my nose sometimes
BIC lighter - never know when you need fire. Or to melt some polish to shine your boots when XO's on a rampage
micro USB cord, 2.1 amp USB wall charger - charging phone and Nexus 7 if need be
Canon ELPH 330 HS and charger - you see some cool things on deployment
3.5mm audio cord - for plugging my music into the plane's Bose headsets
Bose QC15 headphones - for when I don't want to hear anything from anybody for a bit
JVC Marshmallow headphones - easy headphones on the go
flight gloves - hate to say it, but I only carry these to get my food out of the oven
ratty old ballcap - It's a VP thing to wear ballcaps when you fly. At certain times of day, it's the only thing that works
fixed blade 7" knife with firestarter - because I want to... and it was $6
Electric Charge sunglasses with case - with the white frames and gold-plated lenses, I love flying with these
Preon 2 - pre-and postflight walkarounds at night
microfiber cloth - cleaning glasses, tablet and most importantly, the HUD
Kershaw Burst - you always need a knife or 3
15.6" laptop, charger, 16GB USB 3.0 thumbdrive, Nexus 7, Kindle, USB OTG cable and WD Passport external HDD, and self-inflating mattress and pillow - long overnight flights

    Whew

Im looking for a new back pack. But i carry this and leave it in the car and when at work its on my work bench.
I also have another small bag with my paracord and knot tying tools.

Spare batteries need to pick up more tomorrow
Lm skeletool lost my wingman need to get another
    Pen rhodia number 10
    folding scissors,mini tape measure
    Rhonson torch lighter,mini bic
    Back up knife
    whistle,tweezers,and nailclipper on some paracord
    spork
    wet ones not in pic
    tylenol in eclipse tin
    Kiridishi
    Booboo kit

Ok i work with sheet metal, and sometimes get minor cuts so i carry the booboo kit,the spare light is for when my supervisor needs to check my machine when i cant fix it and i don't like loaning him or anyone my good one.On break i tie knots so i use the scissors, tape measure and lighter for that.Spare batteries for my lights because you never know when the ones it it may die.Sometimes i need to jot stuff down so i carry the pen and notepad for that. The spork is very important nothing is worse then going to eat and there is no flatware available or you forgot yours at home. The kiridishi i just like it as it was a gift.I bring this little bag everywhere but if im not at work,or at my unit it stays in the glove box till i get home then i bring it inside.

I don't have a camera so I will post what is in my newly created edc bag.
On the outside dangling off the shoulder straps of the bag:
    Safelight flashlight
Red photon fredom micro. These are both to be seen when walking home
    Inside the bag:
    A 25g quick clot
    A 50g quick clot
    Pair of latex gloves
Small zip loc of bandages, first aid supplies. All just In case
    A zebra f301
    Sharpie marker for marking
Notepad for jotting down my thoughts
High visibility vest. Also when walking home from work at night.
Pair of custom leather raft gloves. It gets cold out.
    Eagle creek quarter cube containing:
Flint steel, lighter, 2 wetfire tinder cubes, waterproof case with assorted waterproof, storm proof and strike anywhere matches. Because I have OCD
Another eagle creek quarter cube containing:
Gorilla glue duct tape roll of 30', green glow stick, 30' of 550 cord, 2 thermal blankets, a rain poncho. Because I have OCD.
I guess this bag is sort of an edc bag/ get home bag. I know there is a bunch of room for improvement. This is my first time trying to make an edc bag. And I don't know what I'm doing.

Here's my gear. If I'm traveling and am dedicating time to taking photos I'll include a DSLR with 2-3 lenses, a battery holder with eneloops and a few other small items.

To be fair the rig in the top left corner isn't part of the bag, but it's part of daily carry so I included it. Anyway my bag has extra medical supplies and some basic tools, lights, spare batteries, shemagh, eye protection, dope cards for the rifle, etc. Not everything in the pic is carried either, some or a lot is removed depending on what I think might happen and so on.
