I used to carry my keys and phone in my hands while running because I was afraid it would fall out from my shorts. Now that I discovered 5.11 holster shirts, I just carry in there. It's a great compression shirt that is meant for firearms, but you can put anything in there. http://images.afmo.com/milspecmonkey/511holstershirt/006.jpg Rule #3 Regards, --Moderator Boy SureFire

With water (duh), cellphone, multitool, keys, some money and sunglasses! I found that a slim backpack like this that fits snug on my back doesn't bother me at all! During any sports activities (running, cycling or just at the gym) i also wear my t3c with the hrm.....
I usually run in the evening after the kids go to bed. I take my Iphone for music and in case of emergency. I take a single cell light so it doesn't weigh me down and a Sunnto Vector to keep track of time. I also stay in the 3-4 mile run range so I don't pack water and I feel safe in my neighborhood so no knife.
I'm going to chime in as a former distance runner, and current running enthusiast. don't carry water, stay hydrated through the day (granted, this means not running in 120 degree, 80% humidty; you'll have to *gasp* wake up early) don't carry a gun, or a knife, or whatever. if you're really worried about getting mugged drive/ride a bike to a safer area lace your key into your shoe, and you're all set.
my main 'safety' concern for running are dogs. 99% can be scared off, but that 1%... I've taken to tucking a kabar ldk in the pouch for my iphone or when I pushing the BOB something else in front of the handlebar.
running EDC: -single car key on necklace -Boker SubClaw clipped to pocket (still feel naked w/o a knife) -Timex Ironman Sleek for interval timing. -cheap Oakley knockoff sunglasses from the 'dollar store'.
usualy only go for a 5 mile jog so its my normal edc + a 90 lb lab- because if I NEED to run chances are I wont have time to empty my pockets and I like to have my gear with me at all times. the four or five pounds weight is not realy a big differance for me
1. Water 2. Small Multitool 3. AA Flashlight 4. Folding Knife 5. Level I F.A.K. 6. Cellphone 7. Keys 8. Waterproof Lighter 8. Cash & ID's 9. Plastic Bags I carry this in a thin waterproof underarmour hydration pack that looks exactly like this one: Sans the FOX logo. **OC Spray on one hand; MP3 Player on the other. -It's around 2~4 lbs depending on how much water is in the bladder. I used to run with this Swiss gear hydration pack: And it worked equally well except for not being waterproof. The Underarmour is almost submersible!
When i lived Queens i would carry two ASP Batons (as hand weights) and my Ipod for music. Unfortunately expandable batons are illegal to carry where i currently live with a small ~2" blade on my waitband.
In an Active Pro Gear Jogger Concealment Holster, I carry: Wallet Folder 2 x CR123 Flashlight Cell Phone Handgun
I trail run with my dog all the time and usually carry a sizable load. Maxpedition Falcon pack Platypus water bottles Guyot collapsable dog bowl cell phone digi camera tick tweezers flashlight energy bar dog treats first aid/trauma kit for me and K9 fire steel athletic tape bee sting/snake bite kit carabiner krama scarf (type of Thai bandana) nylon K9 muzzle water purification tablets Sometimes its more gear depeding on weather and location, but I carry this with me everyday with my dog when we are outside= even going for a run around the neighborhood or something
I've ran for 30+ years and typically run about 5 marathons annually (last 6) years. I am a minimalistic guy so I run with my Garmin 405, my "cut down" truck key tied to my shoe lace, Road ID on wrist, tiny SanDisk MP3 player. and vandal-proof hose bib key.
I clock about 6km three times a week and only have my phone, Ipod and house key with me in a small, flat waist pouch. May soon start adding a knife if I can find a place that stocks the Boker Subcom Titan
My neighborhood is fairly quiet and safe given an active police presence. I don't exercise much so I just hydrate before and after. I go without pockets in the warmer months, so on either front side of my shorts' waistband I clip a pair of keys (dangling inside for less jangling) and a Sansa MP3 player. Phone stays loosely gripped in hand via wrist lanyard.
Used to run a lot when I was younger. Now I just walk. As a runner I always carried the absolute minimum. I don't like a bunch of junk bouncing around in my pockets as I slog along, and my running shorts usually didn't have pockets in them anyway. When I was an active runner I kept a single house key in a little pouch that was attached to the shoe laces. When I ran in areas where dogs might be an issue I would occasionally carry a key-chain sized can of tear gas in my hand (this was before pepper spray was common). I also had an FM-radio buit into a headset so I could listen to music. These days I would probably wear an iPod or MP3 player. Nowadays when I walk I carry house keys, a photo id, and a cell phone. I don't really need much else.
