I'll admit that I'm not up on steel specifics like I should be, but do like the following: S30V (ZT0350), O1 (Blind Horse Knives Patch Knife and Long Trail), and 1095 (Moras).

For some reason, I'm thinking H1 is proprietary.

I've always prefered 154CM or just a good carbon blade.

I'm diggin' 154CM lately.. I tried jimping the spine on my Gator Drop-Point folder & can't even hurt it with a file!
S30V & VG 10 are tied for second.

I'm loving vg10 for its value and s30v is one of my favorite high end blade steels

I like 154cm for my folders because it holds it edge well, but it isn't too much of a pain to sharpen. Aus-8A or 8Cr13MoV is a second favorite for general use or beater knives since its just a decent steel. 1095 is by far my favorite for fixed blade knives. Yeah, it can rust, no it won't hold its edge for forever, but it is unlikely to chip, even in cold weather. Just my 2 cents...

I've been digging the D2 on my Spyderco Para-Military. Also loved it on the BM32 Morpho. It keeps its edge for me for a long time and takes a super sharp edge with little difficulty.

I believe you are correct but with all the spydie love around, I figured someone might say it.

Mine should show up Wednesday or Thursday then it'll probably be another month or two before I stop babying it.

My overall favorite is RWL34. Easy to drill, saw and grind, easy to finish, does not tend to distort during heat treatment, gets very sharp, stays reasonably sharp for a long time, easy to resharpen, stainless. For special demands there are better steels but this one is very good for an edc knife.

All of the above, plus others.

For me, it really depends on the intended purpose. I used to favour stainless varieties (440c and ATS34), but lately have found great joy in the M series tool steels and plain carbon like 1095.

Right now my EDC uses M390, only had it about a week now and haven't had to sharpen it yet so can't tell you what it's going to be like in that regard.

But as I have said many times before, the quality of the heat treatment is far more important than the steel used. Fortunately for us, most of the bigger quality manufacturers have made some real improvements in that regard over the last few years so we are seeing far less issues with bad H.T., but it still does happen.

IMHO, many users buy knives with super steel blades for bragging rights rather than actual performance differences. Not all people, but many... :)

My performance criteria are fairly simplistic. Will it rust easily (I do live in the northwest afterall)? and will it hold an edge? I've had rare issues with knives holding an edge unless I was "abusing" them. ;D For my use, anything less corrosion resistant than D2 just usually doesn't cut it (no pun intended)

I carry Bucks, Vic SAKs and Case knives ( both CV and SS) and have never had any issues with edge holding or sharpness.

My fave knife that fit your exact criteria and did incredibly well in very high humidity climates ... is my Fallkniven F1.

The composite stainless steel blade had unreal performance & maintenance characteristics in said environment ...

I sure like the vg-10 on my spydercos. I sharpened my Delica for the first time yesterday and it took a wicked edge in no time at all. It seems to hold an edge for a while too.

1095 is my preferred steel, given it has a good heat treat.
