so, i had this crazy idea to have a sterling silver hook made. sterling silver has antimicrobial properties, therefore a hook made out of sterling would be the perfect thing for touching (or flushing) something that i really didn't want to touch, right? (see, that's the crazy part)

i fired up sketchup and a little while later had a working model. i uploaded it to shapeways and wasn't happy with the price. back to sketchup to take off whatever i could. a bit of cubic centimeter shaving later, i had a design i liked better, shapeways priced it close to my goal, and we were off.

one month to the day, this showed up via ups (it was only supposed to be 2 weeks, but the holidays...they did contact me to let me know of a delay):

i boosted the edges in this pic to show off the lines left by the 3d printer.

at roughly three inches in length, it fits right in with my other keychain doodads.

i opted for the regular finish (not the polished) in order to see the print lines...that and i was too cheap to have a polish put on a thing that is going to get beat up on a keychain. i'll probably round the edges after a while.

what have you guys and gals done?

LOL cool. I personally just use a square of new teepee to flush...or dirty it up even more by kicking the flusher :p

Interesting concept. It should round up pretty quickly as silver is quite soft. How much? Have you thought about getting it done in stainless and having it plated?

There's a lot of bathrooms in America. A lot of smaller businesses haven't thrown down the cash to replace them yet. :)

right around $110 shipped. i thought about many options, i would have preferred copper. HOWEVER, i have no access to anything more advanced than a dremel and some hand files. i'm into this project for ~$100 and 15 minutes of my labor. i had no cleanup, total and absolute control, no frustration of failing in my first attempts and no time spent looking for/talking to machine shops.

Failing your first attempts is half the fun! That's how you get technique and ideas for future projects!

From someone who fails a lot an posts online how to fail, I agree :)

BUT I also agree with shapeways.

Most fun you have with your clothes on.

I am still waiting on the stainless version (MKII) of these shear heads for a Leatherman.

Here are the red plastic ones that didn't quite fit..

I am also waiting on, in the same order (stainless was on sale) a pair of these grips for a Leatherman Wave/Charge.

Right now they are high bond double side tape. If the fit and finish is good, I am going to smooth out both surfaces really nicely and super glue them on.

You sir, are crazy. I like you, but you're crazy lol. Do you find that it gives you enough leverage when pulling a door open like that? It seems like it's small size would make it hard to hold onto when pulling on something heavy like that.

How is the durability of an item made with a 3D printer? All I've ever seen have been photos and I can't tell how brittle/strong/fragile these things are.

Attached to a keychain? I'd say it works just fine.
