Ok, I had never heard the term before, but I googled it. I always thought all conventional analog watches stopped when you pulled out the crown. Not sure why the obtuse phrasing came into use. "Seconds stop" would be clearer, but it's always interesting finding out obscure stuff.
For people that have seen how many mechanical watches work, the term makes perfect sense. A stop or lever is pushed against the fastest moving part (the balance wheel) of the watch to halt its motion. Just like hitting a piece of wood with a blade. Hacking at it. I believe you meant to say obscure or abstruse instead of obtuse. It's a common error. Sent from my LG-V520 using Tapatalk
No, I meant obtuse: defined as not quick or alert in perception, feeling, or intellect; not sensitive or observant; dull. It's correct usage.
The term, correct or not is the proper terminology for the feature, has been for decades more than I've been alive. We take for granted the seconds stopping feature now because basically all quartz watches and most mechanicals can do it. But there are a lot of movements out and about right now that do not "hack" One famous example is the seiko 7s26 that was put into the much loved skx007/009 and the monster and several others including seiko 5's designed to be aviator and field watches. Another example is the miyota 8200 series of movements, I have a divers style auto with the skeletonized version and it does not hack, the movement was produced just prior to 2010. The movement in my Bulova Hack watch is the 82SO, a reworked 8200 that added the hacking feature. So they named it the Hack watch, they have the history from their earlier military used models, the A11 and later the ones designed for soldiers going to vietnam, one of the requirements from the military procurment was that the seconds hand had to hack so there you are. Today I'm wearing my timex MK1 mechanical, another homage to an older watch (the camper) and the earlier military style sprite. I had to replace the movement on this one and I broke the seconds hand installing it. Waiting for timex to contact me back for a replacement .
Speaking of the military, we don't want to go down the rabbit hole of terms like: Click Mike Knot Cover Head Hawk Tango Chalk Kinetic Jody and those are some of the polite ones! Sent from my LG-V520 using Tapatalk
This baby three eyed Monster has settled in to run pretty close to the time clock. It must be said however that Indiglo beats the heck out of electro luminescence. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G930A using Tapatalk
Seven years since my first post in this forum, and over five year since my last! I am still doing this stuff though, and as of recently can be found on Instagram... Today I’m rocking a heavily modified SKX013 with only the dial, hands, and bezel remaining as factory components! My username is the watermark in the corner...
