A truly vintage Concord Mariner SG:
I pulled this pic off the web. It is very very close to the watch I own... (I gotta force myself to take some pics!)

Backstory: I bought this watch I believe in 1982 or 1983. I was living and working in Taiwan at the time; I was Engineering Manager at an American electronics plant in Taiwan. This was an interesting era for watches. About this time it seemed that every local taxi driver in Taipei was sporting a fake Rolex submariner (had quartz drives!) dangling from his wrist. A bunch of us ex-pats, all earning good salaries (OH YEAH, THOSE WERE THE DAYS!) wanted to get good watches. Needless to say we wanted the real deal; we didn't want anyone to confuse our watches with the fake Rolexes, etc.

One of the guys, already a watch addict, identified a legit jeweler in HK as a solid source. Very soon most of us made the pilgrimage. Several bought Concord; several bought Omega (the Constellation was popular then); several bought Rado; etc etc.

I liked the Concord because it had a somewhat sporty appeal; VERY slim on the wrist (mine is a mere 6.09 mm from crystal to back!). Speaking of the crystal. True sapphire. Still the original one. NO SCRATCHES, although the bracelet which is SS certainly shows some :)

At the time this watch cost me US$500. That summer, on a trip back to US, I went into a jeweler in Detroit (my hometown) and it was selling for about $900!

Over the years it was my daily driver. When it needed a new battery I either took it back into HK, or, when back in the US had it serviced at Tourneau Corners in NYC - at the time the authorized US service center for Concord.

I moved to Virginia in 2000. Sometime after that, I stopped wearing the watch because the service center insisted internal corrosion was an issue and repair cost was not in my budget.

BUT wait.... Here in Northern Virginia we're blessed with a true watchmaker; store name 'John Alabaster'. I had to be there last week, so on a whim I took the Concord in. Tech opened it; saw some minor powder corrosion no doubt from a battery, and we decided to try a new battery. Eureka! Started right up! He also let me know that if worst comes to worst, a replacement movement for this watch whilst not cheap is nowhere near what Tourneau Corners quoted.... Yeah, I'm shocked also! ;)

Oh yeah, I mentioned the early 1980's were an interesting watch time. Turns out the venerable square G-shock hit the market around 1983. I actually had one for kicking around. Too bad back then the straps tended to crack. That watch got trashed... wish I still had it as a collector's item!

    Hope some found this interesting!

    Am Yisrael Chai!

The DA46 arrived so time to move the DA36 along. I was waiting to make sure the bracelet was compatible with both, it is.

I'm getting close to pullng the trigger on that blue Citizen diver! I want a stainless bracelet for it, but am having trouble finding one that is both affordable (under $40) and has good reviews. Together the watch & bracelet would hit my $200 budget limit.
    Enjoy that beauty PBJS II!
