For a number of reasons, I have no use for a knife blade in a multi tool and I would like to find a multi tool that does not come with a knife blade. Can anyone recommend a multi tool that does not come with a knife blade? Thanks, Ed.
You and me both, brother, but I guess we're in the minority. At one time, Leatherman made the Knifeless Fuse apparently hoping it would be TSA-friendly (it wasn't). I bought one anyway and didn't care for it, too clunky for my tastes. I don't know of any others.
The forums here are a gold mining about it: i'm sure you'll have a plenty of different skilled solutions in a while. Thinking about the MT ones i got, the simplest thing that came in my (unskilled) mind was: buy the one you like the most, then swap off the blade and fill the space with washers. But as i said, i leave the word to the specialists, 'cos i honestly admire and love their work showed here.
I was able to bring a Fuse with the knife blade removed into the library of congress and to school everyday. it was then replaced by a wingman with the knife removed however if you do go this route remeber there is the clam shell opener and the scissors which might be misinterpreted by different people.
Even better, swap the blade for a file or a serrated blade if you can (if there's room). I've got an original PST and a serrated coping blade from SOG sitting on bench that I'll hopefully get around to combining one day. The SOG blade just needs to be ground down a bit by the pivot. I'd love to replace the blade in my SideClippy with something else, but the space where the blade goes is pretty much "blade-shaped" (a file probably out of the question).
If you haven't yet, definitely search the forums, there have been a couple recent threads on this. The only knife-less multi-tools currently being made are smaller ones. The Leatherman style PS is the main one. There are a bunch made by swiss-tech as well. If you need a smaller tool, the PS will probably suit you well, if you need something bigger, take the blade off of a LM Wingman as suggested above. If you don't need scissors or pliers, you could go with a one-piece multi-tool like the LM Piranha. You could also go with 2-3 tools in a belt holster to handle your needs. For example, small needle nose pliers and a pair of scissors. For me, my main tool needs are scissors and a prying/scraping tool. I pocket carry a County Comm widgy bar and a pair of Slip and Snip folding scissors and they take care of most situations I come across.
I've got a SOG Powerlock which I picked for the geared pliers, and the ease with which you can remove and change the tools. I don't have a blade fitted in it, and replaced a few of the stock tools with others that are more useful to me.
This is all good info and I can see I am not alone, looks like someone wanting to make it big should go into the multi tool without knife business. Anyway, please continue to add comments and suggestions, thanks to all,Ed
I took an LM Style PS on a plane from Detroit to Las Vegas and back with no problem. One of the TSA people spent about a minute looking at it trying to find the blade until another TSA glanced at it and said it was good to go. It has a carabiner type clip so you can clip it to keys and such, and the clip is also a bottle opener.
I'm surprised there are not more knifeless mt's. Many countries and cities don't allow knives. For me, I don't use the mt knife very often so I've always wanted a knifeless Spirit or Surge. I did make a WingKick that doesn't have a knife. Problem is, not the best mt imho.
