I've made buckets of homemade micarta but not like this. I've been itching to make a slingshot for a long time, even had some band sets sitting around on my desk for months that I ordered pre-assembled, and wanted to somehow incorporate micarta into it. I couldn't think of a good way to put the layers together after they were shaped like a slingshot so I decided to press it all together as one glob of stuff. I think it worked. Time will tell if it will all stay together. Here is a sandwich of canvas, blue construction paper and a slab of walnut. slingshot_lumpofstuff by city_ofthe_south, on Flickr Here it is after spending some time with my jig saw. The pattern is from the slingshot forum called the mule. slingshot_shapedobject by city_ofthe_south, on Flickr Pretty quick project really. I think I will go buy a 2" hole saw and cut the crotch first on future variations. To get mine to come out nice I did spend a little extra time with a round file and round dura-block getting it shaped up nicely. slingshot_finished1 by city_ofthe_south, on Flickr Here it is with a Kershaw Link. I was going to skip on the Link thinking they might eventually put it out with Sandvik steel or something, but the design is so good looking to me, I just had to get one. I do really like it. slingshot_link by city_ofthe_south, on Flickr It's finished with 400 grit paper and the tube is just 1/4" aluminum cause it seemed like it needed something extra to dress it up. slingshot_finished2 by city_ofthe_south, on Flickr
excellent work, do you make knife scales as well? A matching slingshot&knife set would look oh so wonderful...
Yes, I have in the past and that's a great idea! I've got 3 more band-sets and some various woods for making more.
