Snapped a couple quick photos of a prototype design I worked on today. It's a valet tray that folds into a closed pouch. Carries your items to the destination, and gives you a nice place to put them when you get there. Being a prototype, I spared the good leather and used some remnants I had from a leather couch I re-upholstered. I'm really liking the design though, so I'll probably make a few small tweaks to the pattern and then make one from some Horween Essex.

What do you guys think? Would anybody be interested in something like this?

For my own use, I'll be adding a spot for a pen on the inside, one or two card pockets to the inside, and maybe a large pocket or two small card pockets to the outside.

So, due to a positive response to this prototype on several forums, I decided to make some tweaks to the design and knock out one in some proper leather (Horween Essex, 4-5oz). Although not complete, I figured I would share some work-in-progress photos:

This piece is by far the largest item I have hand stitched (4 times the size of my field notes covers), so I needed to make a special clamp to hold the pieces for the saddle stitching:

Some photos of the leather panels stitched together. Will have snaps added and edges burnished tonight, and I'll toss up some photos of the finished product afterwards:

I would be interested. I looked at a couple online but nothing with the Buy appeal.

    I like it.
I like that it folds up so it'd be a nice travel item

Yeah, that's what I was going for. I've seen alot of nice valet trays that would be good if they were going to be left at home, but I wanted something I could toss onto my desk at work, or take with me when traveling. And since it doubles as a pouch to carry the items I would commonly put on it, I'm killing two birds with one stone.

Based on the pen, the dimensions are about 7"x7"?

    When folded as a pouch: 12" x 6"

    When folded as a valet tray: 9" x 9" x 2.5"

This is actually larger than the first prototype, and I think I will be making the next design iteration smaller (It's a little too large I think). The next iteration should be closer to 10" x 5" as a pouch, and 7" x 7" x 1.5" as a tray.

Prototypes will certainly be up for grabs. I think we can work something out... :)

That's a great idea. It's stylish and really functional, and like you said, it combines storage and travel. 2 birds with 1 stone. You're on to something here. Well done, sir!
