I wanted one of these ever since seeing Red Dawn as a kid. Bought one last year, but it is almost too warm to wear. Not today, -26 with wind as well. It was perfect. I am ordering another, this one black. They come from Ukraine, genuine military surplus. Would love a big furry one.

Yes, they are AWESOME! I picked up a nice Kangol one two winters ago. It'll keep you warm when nothing else will. It's definitely too warm to wear it in anything over freezing temperature.

Because Dutch winters are generally mind, I only get to wear mine maybe two weeks every year. It's a shame really, as they are awesome headgear.

Yup, excellent for cold weather. I was guarding a security barrier last year and it kept my head nice and warm (and it wasn't even a proper one).

Bought one many years ago at a gun show: I asked the Russian guy who was selling them what they were made from and he told me that in the old Soviet Union they were told that they were made from "fish fur." Regardless of the actual materials used it has been handy on several occasions.

I wear a Columbia bomber. With the wind chill we are approaching -40, so I don't have anyone complain about the rabbit fur on it. Vegans don't last long in this weather.

This morning up here in Maine it was -18 below. Yesterday while at the mall I saw an older gentleman wearing a hat like the one shown above but it was very very furry. It looked like the guy was wearing a wolf on his head, but with that said it looked extremely warm and I could of used it today. It looked like the one below except more hair...

I'm no expert, JMS42687, but that sure looks like wolf fur in your photo. I've got one with a quilted lining in it and it sure is warm.

Yeah I need to get one, animal fur is really hard to beat for warmth.

I had some snowmobile pants that were lined with beaver fur and they were the warmest pants I've ever worn. The downfall was they had no protection from getting wet. I've tried hard to find some more with actual animal fur but I haven't had much luck.

When my husband went to the South Pole, his pants were made of seal skin. Those are pretty waterproof.

I used to have one when I was in high school. It was made with rabbit fur and was too warm for Kentucky winters if you were doing any kind of activity. Even a brisk walk made my head sweat. I imagine they would be pretty nice if you had some kind of stationary outdoor winter work, like manning a guard post/shack or something. I think they look nice, though.

    Went with size 62XXL
Make sure you measure your head. My Grey Ushanka is a tad tight - not too bad but could use just a little more room. Think my wife will like it for her birthday?

    Holy heck...you found it.

Yes it's like the second one.

It was very disproportionate in regards to the rest of his body, he was about 5'0 very very small frame with that huge fur hat on. It was kinda hilarious not only because of the hat but also because we were inside the mall where it was about 80 degrees.

Guy at work wore one of those when the temps were below zero last year. He comes in, hangs up his coat, leaves the hat on his desk, and goes for coffee. I come along and see this big, furry ball on top of the desk and stopped dead in my tracks for a second. Running through my mind was what objects were nearby that I could use to beat the invading creature with.
