So, there seems to be quite a lot of discussion if strobe is useful for defense or not. Personally I think it can be quite useful if used correctly.
But what about animals? Do you think it would help repell them if one would attack you? A dog for example?

Doesn't effect my shepherd at all. Works great on bunnies...

Against animals I can't imagine it to be very effective at all.

Even against humans, it's questionable. The split second you disorient someone is probably better spent running away or utilizing a more effective weapon in a dangerous situation.

I've tried to imagine using the strobe mode of any light against an attacker.

    Attacker: Gimme' your wallet.
Me: Hold on a second... [gets out flashlight] Now, is this light 4 quick presses of the power switch? ...or is it one press of the power switch, a twist of the bezel, then two more presses of the power switch? ...or is it...
Attacker: What are you doin', man?
Me: I'm trying to get my flashlight into strobe mode. It'll freak you out, trust me.
[later regains consciousness in back of ambulance and finds wallet gone]

If you expect to use your flashlight for self defense, carry a BIG FREAKIN' HEAVY flashlight.

I think the best use of the strobe would be for getting someone's attention while stranded on Gilligan's Island.

The only thing I’ve ever used the strobe for was traffic control, with and without a traffic cone. And for that, it works like a charm.

I've tried strobe on several types of animals resulting in no affect whatsoever in their behavior.

Most of my lights have strobe and i've only used it once on one light too in the very same condition! I was assisting a road-side accident, i put up my warning triangle thingy on the road but wasn't sure how visible it was so i just put my flashlight running strobe down the road a bit aimed at the triangle. Looked like a freaking disco. Nobody ran into my car or the accident so i guess it worked?

I have used strobe on my flashlights countless amount of times when I forgot my bike lights (where im at driving with no light is a hefty fine). Also used to carry red filter for rear light backup.

Blinking lights on your bicycle will get you a very nice ticket over here. Why on god's green earth would you not just use your flashlights regular light on your bicycle, imagine what a mess it would be if everyone only used strobe in traffic....

I agree with the consensus here that a strobe doesn't work on animals. It is, however, EXTREMELY effective against drunk people. a high-intensity strobe combined with something like the robocop sound grenade will be sufficient to resolve most situations non-violently (assuming it's dark and you're in a public place where they would reasonably expect someone to hear your sound grenade). For situations where non-violent resolution isn't feasible, then unless you have a striking bezel (DNA catcher) on your light then you will be better off reaching for something else.

I use it more for signaling. I think no if I was to use my light for defense just shining all those lumens in someone’s eyes would be distracting enough.

I only have one light with a strobe. I use the strobe if I'm walking at night and I want to be sure drivers 'should' [;-)] spot me!

Mmm I love riders who carry strobes not angled down so none of it blinds drivers. It gives me a reason to turn on high beams + hid's + light bars and drive towards them for as long as possible so they have their night adjusted eyesight wrecked and hopefully crash into a ditch and break their necks.
Haven't seen anyone walking with a strobe yet

Flashlights in general including strobe seem to have no effect on dogs IME. I believe strobe is good for signaling but mostly undesirable otherwise. My old Quark had a fantastic UI except for the strobe that kind of ruined the high mode. It is just better IMHO to not have strobe or at least have it hidden so it is not easy to activate.
