Kind of Modern Takes on the idea of the Tool Roll but in my experience a lot more practical for me too.
I had used a few like you show but the compartments are rarely right unless it is for wrenches I find and there is way too much fabric too making the roll too big for the amount they hold.
I also always found tools falling out of the roll as I handled them?
That may just be me though.
These Zipped compartment bags do not share those issues for me.

I’m actually in need of a long tool roll (36”+) to contain items I keep in the back of my truck when I venture out into the wilderness. Specifically: an axe, pry bar, bow saw, etc. Does anyone know of something like that? Just a simple canvas roll would do, nothing fancy needed.

But to answer the OP’s question, I typically don’t use a roll for EDC/work use, but I do use the clear, mesh pouches to organize tools within a larger tool bag. So kind of a similar concept, just different execution. I think a roll would work just as good, though.

    I've been considering it.

I use a small tool roll for my frequently used tools and it has worked out well --- I have a small pouch for office supply stuff from my old laptop bag which has migrated to my precision tool bag --- I think it would be better as a tool roll, easier less fussy access.

I keep my wrenches in 2 homemade rolls. One metric and one standard. Couldn't find anything off the shelf since I wanted my regular wrenches and my gear wrenches side by side in the same roll. Nothing fancy just some black duck cloth I got on clearance.

I use this one, but a generic Amazon version instead of the Carhartt model. Great for what I need.

Well, I do have a roll bag for some of my knives - hardly call that EDC. :)
On the other hand, I think the rolls really come into their on for wrenches - find the size you need at a glance; see if someone has borrowed one at a glance, and you don't have to spill out or fish around for the right tool. I use several for this. And a larger roll bag for a collection of tools I can carry to a job without hauling the big tool box.
But the closest thing to everyday use (still not EDC, per se) is a nice leather roll up designed to collect all the small charging cables and chargers that multiply like wildfire. Not essential, but nice to keep them organized together.

Following this thread - and after spending some time yesterday with one of my other 'hobbies' ;) - I have a decent pen collection - I realized I do have some specialized 'tool-rolls'.

Most of my pen 'sets' (e.g., a set consists of ballpoint or rollerball, mech pencil, some sort of retractable eraser, and fountain pen) are in just straight up cases with 3 or more slots. But... germane to this thread ... I do have several pen roll-cases; each as 5 slots. They're more bulky than the other cases but come in useful on occasion.
