I have used a medium custom Timbuk 2 messenger bag for the last 2.5 years at my new job. I love the capacity and the toughness but I have grown tired of the wrestling with the shoulder strap and the thing being so "limp".

I would like something slightly more professional but still durable with as much capacity/compartments and more of a "frame" in that it isn't like the messenger bag.

Don't want a backpack and I do want a shoulder strap so that I can have both hands free if I need them. Not looking for an overly tactical look either.

    Any ideas? Pics are appreciated!

Check out Tom Bihn, great bags, if a little pricey. I've owned a few of their items and have never been disappointed.

Carlos is very very correct. Tom Bihn has a variety of things that will fit what you're looking for. If you can upgrade to the Absolute strap on the bag you choose the $ is well worth it. Also, they have a great forum community who can and will answer your questions and provide assistance in getting a bag that will suit your needs.

If you do buy from Tom Bihn make sure you mention finding them on EDCF as they support the Forum and there is a benefit to EDCF.

Topo Designs also has some interesting bags that might trip your trigger.

I have a Tom Bihn Ego in my Buy, Sell, Trade thread that might interest you.

If you're looking for more "structure", you'll want heavier material, e.g. 1000D nylon. I'm not aware of a messenger-style bag with a frame (or framesheet).

I had a similar problem after carrying the Timbuk2 Commuter Messenger with way too many organizational pockets, slots, and sections for a few years. Made the bag heavy and stiff; even when empty it felt like I was carrying a laptop and textbooks. Finally donated it to Goodwill and surprising found a Manhattan Portage messenger there for $10. Unfortunately it's not much on organization, fixed with a few zipper pouches. I realize I really don't need to pack everything and the kitchen sink in a bag to go to work.

    Look at SF Bags too.
They have Cargo Latop bags that do have internal frames inside and let the bags sit upright on their own and with just a little more structure than most.

I also have several Bihn bags and highly recommend them too but the SF or Waterfield bags are truly a little different and sound like what you might need?
They are also the same high quality American made goods as the Bihn.

    At least check them out.

Did you check the Timbuk2 command plus messenger?, its more structured and have a business appeal to it.

I love my Rickshaw Messanger and it will stand up on its own empty. I also have a Tom Bihn Zephyr briefcase with the Absolute shoulder strap. Both are awesome and I switch off.

A Fjallraven vintage shoulderbag might be worth looking at.
