I have seen these locally and I do wear a akuba deluxe rabbit pelt fedora in the fall and winter, but I am not so sure these are worth it and wanted some informed opinions before buying one.
I have three and I love them, but I've never seen or tried an akuba, so I have no idea how it compares. Still, I think they are worth their price.
Its the first hat that survived more then one year of travel! 2006 in amazone region => cotton beenie thing got rotten 2007 in Afrika => sun UV-ed my north face hat to pieces 2008 in austria=> wind trew my cap into a canyon 2009 in sweden => bought the tilley, stops the rain pretty good! 2010 in cambodia => first time around the equator that i didn't get sunburn, didn't leave my head for 4 weeks! and this years it's comming with me to the azores! Like most people here I swap gear pretty fast but the tilley is indistructable and doesn't deform, which is a big plus! My advise: if it fits your head, buy it!
I have three - a "fancy" one for dress up occasions, a regular white one for everyday usage, and a very floppy hemp one for the pool. Yes. They are worth every penny. Especially for the cranially enhanced, as they offer size 8 hats (surprisingly hard to find).
Ok, I guess I cannot go wrong with answers like that. They were kind of expensive which is why I have not picked one up yet. Thanks for the input folks, now I just have to pick one out!
it may be inexpensive, but consider the guarantee - I have returned (and have had replaced by the vendor) not one but two Tilley hats, no questions asked. All I paid for was shipping. That is Brilliant Customer Service.
WORTH IT. They're built tough, look good, and make a great every-day hat. I got the medium-brimmed Outback waxed cotton (TWC5) and it goes with me everywhere. I never in a million years would have worn a wide-brimmed hat (I thought they looked old fashioned and out of style) but then I realized I can pull off whatever I want. artofmanliness.com has a few great articles about hats. Also eBay is a good place to look. Mine was 50-60 instead of the 75 on their website.
If you have reached the point in your life that you are going to wear something for years, then yes. Speaking of Tilly, anyone try this thing: a neck cobbler http://www.tilley.com/Cobber-Neck-Wrap.aspx
I have one and love it...have abused it for year, and although the color has darkened from white to ivory/bone with use, it still functions better than any hat I've ever had/used/heard of...below is the story that sold me on the Tilley Hat: Jamie - nfa
Those have been around for years. You cna find them at your local Walmart or you can order the crystals on-line and make you own in any shape or pattern that you'd like.
I have full and utter faith in their hats and do not hesitate to recommend anyone to pay the price to have one of their own. Their other products...not so much, you can certainly find much cheaper equivalents.
I've tried plenty of other hats because I was sure I could find something just as good for less money. I finally bought a Tilley and wish I'd done it sooner.
I have a TH4 Hemp hat that I have been wearing for about 2 years now every day and it is WELL worth the price!! I love it and it works well in all seasons. I highly recommend them!
Thank you Fusiler. I am budgeting to get one in the next month or so. I really like full brimmed hats for shade, warmth, and precipitation.
I have that same hat (in the cocoa color) and have worn it for about 5 years now...great hat. Very durable and looks pretty cool too.
