A fun exercise--If some power came to you and cast you out of your home, saying you had to make a go of it without creature comforts, but you can take any three items you have in your home to survive--What would those items be?

    Here are the rules,
    1) You must take a picture of the items.
    2) They have to be something you already have in your home, not wish list items. You have to think: What if you got a knock at the door in the next few moments, what would you grab above all else.

This is to get us thinking, doesn't matter if we repeat each other, but we should measure our level of preparedness. I know that most of us carry more than three items everyday and everywhere we go, but this is to get us focused on what we really think is essential and sharing our knowledge with each other. If you pick a firearm--gun, magazines and ammo count as one item as does anything else that has accoutrements like a Bow and Arrows.

    My three items:
KaBar BK-2 Campanion (with a ferro rod stuck in the ranger bands)
    Nalgene Guyot Water Bottle
.45 (Firearm would be a tough decision--long gun or pistol?)

Are the three items meant to help you survive in the wilderness for a long time, or to get you to safety as quickly as possible?

Don't know If matches as "three items", and not minimalist for sure... but surely as answer to the conditions, i say the three bags on lower of the pic (BoB, Kanteen, Jumbo).
Always full loaded of stuff i think useful (don't want to tease you with checking list and so... but say a thing, and there it is, wanna bet ?) and "refreshed" (food, medicine ecc) monthly.
and most of all ALWAYS at the hand's reach, not more than a meter from the door.
    3,2,1 ... ready to go.

Come on guys--you can't grab your BOB, VersiPack or any kind of get home bag--we'ed all grab our BOBs--that takes you over the 3 item limit and negates the exercise.

Why not, it's an item at my disposal when and if the scenario that you proposed were to come up. I mean, that's exactly why we pack these suckers in the first place isn't it? :p

Can't get pics at the moment (pocket dumps at work are dangerous), but...

ESEE 3, nalgene 1 liter water bottle, oversized poncho.

I'm a big time pistol guy, but limiting things to 3 items means no spare mags or rounds, and I would be more likely to require shelter, material processing, and water than I would be to have to shoot anyone.

Of course, that's my answer to a mental exercise. In the real world, I have all of the above and more in my EDC, and my pistol is always on me. If I had to leave *right now*, I would be pretty well prepared to survive 48 hours out of my EDC bag, which weighs less than 10 pounds.

Because the exercise is meant to get you down to the bare bones and think about what is absolutely essential. The "Power" in the scenario won't allow a bag with multiple items as one item. Like I said at the start of the thread: "I know that most of us carry more than three items everyday and everywhere we go, but this is to get us focused on what we really think is essential and sharing our knowledge with each other." JUST THREE THINGS! What do we think is ABSOLUTELY necessary.

In the rules above I stated: "If you pick a firearm--gun, magazines and ammo count as one item as does anything else that has accoutrements like a Bow and Arrows."

The E-toh is a Thai Coconut Machete. It is 5/8" thick at the spine, 17 inches long from handle to tip, convex edge, carbon steel tool. It is a beast of a machete. It is an awesome multi tool. It can chop, cut, split wood, hammer with the spine, dig with the head, use as a draw knife, clear away brush, and (as an added bonus) strike with a sharp rock to get sparks and create fire. :)
