"Well I woke up Sunday mornin', with no way to hold my head that didn't hurt. And the beer I had for breakfast, wasn't bad, so I had one more, for dessert" You're appreciated Jon.
I was really sad when the site was down, however, I was exponentially more productive at work because of it.
If you go into the private owners area of vB's forum you will see the remains of an all out riot and a collection of very very angry people. It is an ugly mess over there and looks like it could get worse.
Thanks to you Jon, and all the admins, who do so much, and put so much time in, to keep this awesome forum running. Now go get some sleep ;-)
haha When I got up and checked (it was like 6:00am) I was like... "NO! MUST... TALK TO... EDCFer! Dang it, I don't have KAMM's number...! O_O I have Defuse's but he's probably still asleep!"
It was down just before I went to bed which just prolonged my bed time because I sat here refreshing it to try and get it back but my refreshing didn't work
I just looked at everything that was in the Store. And I mean, everything! Made a list of stuff for when the coins come in.
Well said. I've learnt both as a member and quasi support for a forum that the longer you take placating members the longer it takes to get back up. I'm sure there's a mathematical equation somewhere that proves it.
I pictured it as a scene from The Simpsons, when violent cartoons get banned and all the kids go outside, rub their eyes and play in the sun. At least that's what I did...
Perhaps a burner phone is called for in these cases, for giving to the support personnel to call you back on. Then turn off the ringer on the primary phone with a status message on the machine. Maybe a new badge for those who interrupted Jon: "Badger" (Is this better, from my personal page.)
Well, I couldn't wait. Emailed xbanker, and almost called tower. At least I had the good sense to leave Jon be as he was most likely a$$holes and elbows trying to get the site back online. Thanks kripto and Jon, and anyone else for getting it back up and running. I'm mobile, baby! My Avatar says: "Stop looking at my udders!"
I am just glad it happened on my weekend. I don't know how I would have managed to get through a workday in the office without the forum. [Seriously]
Having worked system support I have learned (from the sysadmin standpoint) that the best course of action is to send 1 email to the admin with the subject line "Your system is down" with a brief description of what you are seeing, and not expect a response. On the off chance they did not know, this will inform them, and perhaps give them a target. If they already know, they will ignore the message and do their work. Check the web site with increasing delay (15 min, 30 min, hour, 2 hour, 4 hour delays) if you MUST, it won't bother the person fixing it, he can always pull the plug. Never call for a system wide error unless you are the assistant sysadmin. Lest you get the wrath of the BOFH.
