Water Cooler Project For The Outdoor Furkids

Because during the dog days of Summer keeping the furkids cool is pretty darn high on the priority list

Start with 3 pieces of Corning Foamular cut and sanded into disks. They will be stacked (Left to Right = Top, Middle, Bottom). Middle piece gets a rectangular cutout.

Find an unused planter. Planters that are meant for the outdoors have the added benefit of being UV stable.

First two pieces of of Foamular are joined together with silicone caulk. Caulk won't melt the foam like some adhesives, and strength isn't critical as there isn;t a whole lot of stress involved.

Top piece of foam gets a circular cutout. A circular piece of corrugated plastic is also cut to protect the foam from UV and general damage.

Height on planter gets trimmed down the height of the 3 stacked pieces of foam.

Corrugated plastic piece has a circular piece cutout to accomodate stainless steel water dish.

With the requisite kibble bribe, Beau is recruited into product testing to check height of dish and how far a reach it is from the edge of the insulation to the actual dish.

Corrugated plastic top gets are side piece to protect furkids from any sharp pieces from cutting the top cover piece.

Igloo MaxCold Large Ice Block is brought into the mix. Size is 8.70 H x 1.38 W x 5.60 L.

Ice block goes into the appropriate cutout in the second layer of foam.

Top layer of foam goes on.....

    The corrugated plastic cap....

And finally the stainless steel water dish.

Red October investigates, but is not a 100% sure about things.

Hot day.... chilled water, Braveheart is good with that.

Braveheart settles in for a nice long drink.

The love affair with chilled water continues the next day.

During the hottest part of the day, Braveheart wakes up from a nap and beelines for the chilled water.

Out of all the cats, he is the biggest water lover and a lot of times won't pay attention to food (even first thing in the morning) until he gets a drink first.

So far even in the high 80s/low 90s the water stays cool throughout the day. In case, we have a real scorcher there is a reserve ice block to swap.

Once again proving that the furkids are less my cats, than I am their human....

    ATB,
    Sam

My neighbor's cat says good-bye to her every morning, then sleep on my front porch in the sun.
