Back then, I got my fill of talking animals from the Pogo comic. Of course, I also got most of my socio-political info from Doonesbury.:)

Ugh... Math. I hate math... It's fun, but frustrating. I can see where they're coming from with teaching kids to break everything into tens, which is a strategy I do all the time to turn harder problems into problems I know I can solve. The problem lies in the various cockamamie ways they try to teach it. The students at the school I work at have access to an online math practice program. This program is a great source for practice problems, but it often has weird ways of teaching strategies that leave the special education students I work with totally confuzzled. Most of these involve complicated word problems. Some of the students I know just guess at the answers till they can get to the practice sections that are based on games. Then when they try to pass the program's lessons, they don't pass because they didn't learn the basic skills to solve the problem, just how to solve the weird strategies the program has. And when they don't pass, then the program routes them back to other lessons they didn't pass and it just becomes an endless cycle.

The fun part of math that I really love is that there are multiple ways to get the same answer. As long as you teach yourself one system, and you know everything about it and nobody tries to teach you something different, you're golden. As long as one of my students gets the right answer, I don't care much about how they got there, just as long as they can do it again and again.

    +1.

Took some convincing to make it happen though. Foreign authors technically weren't allowed.

Yeah lol... Should have just said, "I'm gonna write and sign this, only because it'll look good for the Anti crowd, and ignore the fact that all of these laws are already in place anyway."
Totally Bogus. I'm still waiting for the Obama/Biden 2016 stickers to come out. <SarcasM>

I know you're in the Netherlands, but is the subject still called English? I've always wondered this.

(If so, technically he wouldn't be a foreign author hehe)

I read it in Dutch for Dutch class, which is where he is a foreign author. It would have been fine for English class (which is called exactly that, taught by a Briton in my case). What would it be called if not English?

We didn't read any literary masterpieces for English class from what I can remember though.

Neither did we. I read Dickens, Stevenson, Shakespeare, etc. on my own for the H-E- double hockey sticks of it.

how is a person that can't be required to show a picture ID to vote, going to be required to show one to fill out a 4473?

I think the question I'm asking is what are the first language classes called in other countries. Eg. In Spain - Spanish, Germany - German etc etc. I think I was wondering if it was a class called grammar or punctuation or something.

Y'know for somebody who's been taught English lessons, and English is their first language…I fear I am not making myself very clear!

And you're probably a better person because of it (more knowledgeable anyway)
I read the catcher in the rye and it didn't make me want to kill hippies either, so there's that too.

    I think I get you

Dutch is just called Dutch. In highschool anyway. Grade school is a blur, but I think we had reading, writing and grammar as seperate things or something. In college or university it's also just called Dutch, and English is also called English. The grammar, punctuation, reading, what have yous are covered in that one class.

    Does that answer your question?

I'm better in English than in my native Dutch nowadays, so I kind of get what you're saying.

Could you be meaning a grammar class? All languages have their own grammar rules.

Can't always teach old dogs new tricks but they still know how to bite.

Odd, we have to show picture IDs when signing in at our precinct, but they'll let any idiot vote anyway.

What I think she meant was that if one would study German as their native language as an example, they'd have seperate classes for grammar, syntax, whathaveyou.

    That's what I figured anyway.
