Now that these are available in the forum store, it's time to make the official announcement!

    The RETREEV Compact Retrieval Tool:

The RETREEV Compact Retrieval Tool is the TEC Accessories version of the conventional grappling hook. However, the TEC version is convenient to carry due to its compact size and light weight. Why would you carry the RETREEV?
    • Trees: Retrieve an item by hooking a branch and shaking
    • Rooftops: Pull off those kid’s toys, fallen branches, etc.
    • Items fallen over a cliff or ledge: Don’t risk your safety, pull them back up!
    • Disasters: Use it to pull up or lower gear and supplies from higher elevations
    • Camping: Throw it over a branch, hook a flashlight to it, and you have a nice area flood light or night light
    • General: Lose an item over a fence? Don’t climb the fence, RETREEV it!
And if that’s not enough, you could simply suspend it from your ceiling and hang your gear from it!
So what makes the RETREEV so different from an ordinary grappling hook?
    • The “spikes” are conveniently stored inside the body until you’re ready to use it
    • Comes with both aluminum and stainless steel spikes
    • Stainless steel spikes will not bend or deform under normal use
    • Aluminum spikes will allow the product to be retrieved by purposely bending the spikes under load. For example, when pulling it out of a tree branch
    • Replacement spikes are available for a nominal cost, extending the life of the product
    • A rare-earth magnet is mounted in the head, and can be used to retrieve metallic objects
    • The unit is weighted towards the head, tipping the tail up when stationary. This allows you to drag the unit across a surface and snag the desired object easier
    • A special "soft-mount" design has been incorporated to hold the spikes in place. This allows for a slight amount of spike movement to reduce the risk of getting the unit wedged in a tree branch for example
    • This is truly a pocket sized device, slip it in your gear bag and you’ll never know it’s there until you need it
CAUTION: This product will not support your body weight and should not be used for climbing or load bearing activities. In addition, great care should be observed when pulling on the unit when aluminum spikes are installed. The unit could suddenly dislodge from its position and cause severe bodily injury.

    SPECIFICATIONS:
The RETREEV main body and cap are made from aircraft grade 6061-T6 aluminum with a clear anodized finish, and includes 1 set of aluminum spikes and 1 set of stainless steel spikes.
    • Overall length: 2.90” [73.5 mm]
    • Head diameter: 0.63” [16 mm]
    • Main body diameter: 0.51” [13 mm]
    • Hole size: 0.177” [4.5 mm]
    • Diameter around spikes when installed: Approximately 2.00” [50.8 mm]
    • Weight (with stainless steel spikes): Under 1 oz [27 grams]
The RETREEV comes packaged in a clear protective tube with stainless steel spikes stored inside the body. A separate vial of aluminum spikes is included in the tube.

I was all, "OK, big deal, another grappling hook for those of us that like to pretend we are BatDad". But then I saw the picture illustrating the magnetic properties. Now, I'm all in.

Yeah, so far I have been able to pull up my Leatherman Wingman which is about 7 oz (about 200 grams). Going to go look for some heavier stuff now...:bounce:

Sure, you laugh, but I'm one of the few people who has a regular need to fish stuff out of in accessible areas.

I hear you on that, my wife years ago dropped the car keys down a drain in a Walmart parking lot. This would have been handy back then, instead I had to move the cover a bit and then use a fishing rod and hook to get it!

Since they’re available for pre-order, is there a date for being in stock, too? I ordered already. ;)

Got my notification, too. So now the wait begins. It will be here in Germany in probably a few days. And then probably a long time in the dark dungeons of the customs office … then, probably in some weeks, months or years, they’ll decide to send me a letter to come and pay fees for getting it. The letter will reach me on a Friday afternoon when they’re closed until Monday, and then I’ll have to work that Monday, without a possibility to go there. That’s how it usually works. ;)

Not a scientific test by any means, but here is a 25kg/56lb weight hanging off two of the steel pins.
I wouldn't want to hang it off just one but it might of done it, and obviously the weight is at the base of the pin, still pretty good though!!

Everyone who carries a Retreev or another grappling hook is welcomed to be part of the Defense of Grappling Hooks Party, with Nick4305 being the President and me being the Vice President. You can display your membership with this seal:

   ;)

I’m thinking about a simplified small version of this for other uses.

Got my Retreev today, including a few replacement spikes, an Isotope 360 (got some vials already) and Vanquest MOLLE sticks. The lady at the customs office thought it’s some weapon part first, but then I explained her I need it for geocaching. I need something to grapple now! :p

Perhaps I should start a thread called "Grapple THIS!" and see what people are grappling :p

I’m currently reading “Access All Areas” by Ninjalicious (a book about urban exploring). While he states the three most important pieces of gear are moist towelettes, a camera and a torch, he suggests bringing a grappling hook, too, as part of supplies and tools. As a contrast, night vision equipment, binoculars and GPS are dubbed as gadgets.
In his definition tools are brought to be used to achieve something, and gadgets are carried because a hope to be able to use them because it would be cool. Whew, I’m carrying a tool … ;)
