I cannot give an official answer, but I believe the black one is anodized or powder-coated aluminum, while the gray one is stainless.

    (That's my guess!)

The stainless steel has a natural brushed finish and the aluminum model is - Aircraft grade aluminum with a Type III hard anodize finish .

I would recommend have that you have the stainless model Cerakoted if you prefer the black instead of the natural finish ,)

    BE WELL .. GH

Just to clarify, only the Type III hard anodized aluminum ones are available right now. The finish on stainless units is undecided as of yet. The stainless samples I had made were tumbled, then bead blasted. I am not sure I want this look as the final finish so I am going to have some tumbled (stone-washed) and see how they look. I may stop at that point or I may continue with the bead blasting.

Type III HA is holding up well on mine so far. I've been carrying it everyday banged around between keys, spy capsule, and a quark mini cr2. Shows no wear yet, I'm sure it will over time but that'll just add character.

So now, for clarification sake, let's say I want to convert this to a tritium fob. Will the 3mm x 23mm Merkava fob fit directly into the aluminum housing/shell, or do I need to purchase the "pellet kit" as well for proper fitment ?

    Thanks!

You need the pellet kit (DIY Kit). It not only allows for the proper fit, but will provide protection for your tritium vial as well.

I've been using both of mine in the last few days. The emitted light is outstanding ... this is high-quality compared to comparable phosphorescent and luminescent products. The casing has dealt well with normal everyday banging-around a few more harsher "drops".

One thing I did not see though ..... what is the duration of efficacy of these tubes? 10 years like many comparable tritium lights?

If you are referring to the standard glow pellet that comes with the unit, it will never lose its glow effect. As long as it can receive a charge, it will discharge (glow) the same way...forever (theoretically).
