i am looking to purchase a tanto folder as my next pocket knife. I would like something that has a thick blade, strong locking mechanism, good grip, and not too long when open. So far the cold steel code 4 and benchmade barrage have grabbed my attention. I have not seen either of these knives in person. Would anyone recommend these knives or maybe have another recommendation?
    Thank you guys so much.

My last knife purchase was a benchmade mini griptillian with a sheepsfoot blade. Looking for something with a better tip for self defense if i needed it.

Really depends on your budget and how much heavy use you intend to give it. I have two tanto folders:

1> Cold Steel Micro Recon. This is a SMALL knife -- intended as a key chain knife. Blade is Aus 8A - a Japanese steel. Black coated. About $25.

2> Kershaw Blur: This is a 'normal' size knife; Kershaw 'Speedsafe', purple handle, 3.375" stonewash CTS-BDZ1; I paid about $45 for it. Weighs in at 3.9 oz.

Thing is, tanto folders come in an enormous range of prices, weights, steel types, etc. There are even several versions of the Blur with tanto blades. You may need to think about what constraints you want or need to put on this purchase.

    Happy Hunting!

I agree with the kershaw blur. I saw somewhere today that they are on sale for around $45. I carried one for 6 years on duty and it never left me hanging.

I thought about buying another one just because I loved it so much.

Tanto Blur. I think CRKT is coming up with some larger frame lock M16s IIRC

Depends on the which steel. Mine was about $45; using the CTS-BDZ1. Not so sure I'd call it a 'sale price'; I'd seen that price at many online sources... Helps if you like purple handles also...;)

If you are willing to pony up the bux, but always have a bid for it if you decide against it, grab a CRK Umnumzaan. It’s live at first fondle. Large CRK collection- had no interest- then I did as above. Just PayPal’d for #4.[IMG]

For what it’s worth, I’ve had the CRKT M16-14zer for about almost two years. I work in EMS full time and volunteer fire and this knife has performed well in the times I’ve needed it to. My only complaint is that it’s chisel ground. It’s easy enough to sharpen and it holds its edge, but I prefer traditional grinds. The chisel grind doesn’t effect performance that I’ve noticed, but you will need to use a different technique to sharpen it.

Sog Flash II would be my recommendation. I enjoyed it tremendously for a number of years. The only reason I am not still carrying it is because I upgraded to the Sog Spec Elite.

Depends on what you want to spend..... I have a few different tanto edge CRKTs and would always recommend Kershaw.
What do you want a display knife or a beater? Under or over $100.00?

I have an original Benchmade CQC-7 somewhere and it was a cuttin' fool. I carried it for about 10 years. Emerson still makes a lot of variations of that and they have also licensed the design to other companies. I had my eye on a Pro-Tech Emerson but the shop never got it in black. Anyway, the size and weight of the Benchmade tanto version was just perfect for general use.

If OP is still trying to decide on tanto knives, I see Blade HQ has the Cold Steel Pro Lite Tanto at around $25. Price varies depending on handle color -- go figure! These are 3.5" blades, with the Cold Steel Tri- Ad lock. Steel is something called 4116; sorry I don't know anything about that.

    Cold Steel Golden Eye

    Hinderer XM-18 Harpoon Tanto

Hinderer XM-18 Harpoon Tanto, Fatty Edition

For something a bit smaller, Kershaw Shuffle II Tanto

    Kershaw Link Tanto

Budget would help narrow things down. LOTS of custom tanto knives out there. Choices also go up if you are open to reverse tanto knives.

Find an Elmax ZT 620. I can't believe they've discontinued them, but they're great.
