Will Hodges is going to turn out a 4.4" super short bolt action pen that will use G2 Mini refills. I'm intrigued and waiting for more details. Reading between the lines it's either a test to see if there's a long term market or a one-off batch. Either way, it has my interest.

FYI, on his latest Instagram video, he's decided to change the name to the Bolt Action Mini, or B.A.M. since 1) it uses the G2 mini refills, and 2) he said he thought B.A.M. sounded better than B.A.S.S.

Really cool ...like a pocket pen. The problem i have is I have a TiPocketPro that comes in really short with the Parker refill and makes a good pocket pen....but I find myself not wanting to pocket it or let it get scratched on the weekends due to how much it cost. My pocket pen problem I suppose. During the week I have no problem caring a pen of any cost and usually go back to Wills.

Well, to be honest, part of their appeal is aesthetic, but for me, they're a tool first & foremost. Any pen that takes a Parker refill will be restricted to at best a minimum length of ~5 inches. The G2 mini refill offers the ability to have a pen in the 4-4.5 inch neighborhood, which allows comfortable front pocket jeans or pants carry. The manner in which you carry will naturally affect your choice. The only questions I have at the moment are the availability of refills and whether the positioning of the clip and bolt knob are going to be comfortable and practical for front pocket pants carry.

I don't seem to be able to find anything about B.A.M. vs B.A.S.S. His Instagram page still shows B.A.S.S. I would think B.A.M. would be confusing, as a lot of people would think maybe it meant Bolt Action Medium. Can you link to the video you referenced?

My problem is that it takes the Pilot G2 Mini refills. First, I don't trust Pilot to not discontinue that pen/refill size again. Second, Pilot doesn't make a navy/blue-black color that I like to use in the mini. They have a range of colors, but no dark blue. Third, they only come in 0.7 tip, and that's too broad for me, I like 0.5. Fourth and lastly, I can't cut down a regular size G2 refill that I like for this new pen. I cut down a regular size refill for my Bolt Action Short pen, but to do it, I go right up to the gel above the ink in the refill. I would be cutting into the gel or possibly the ink to cut one down enough to work in this new mini pen.

I love Will's pens, but for me, this one is going to be a no-go. The good news is that I think the Bolt Action Short is the perfect size & weight, so I don't feel the need to spend the money on one of these.

I can't because I'm at work (and Instagram is blocked here), but the latest thing he's posted (as of last night anyway) is a video talking about the refill. He mentions the name change in that video. One of the justifications is that the pen uses the G2 Mini refills, thus the Bolt Action Mini.

The solution is simple...use a full size G2 refill in your choice of color and point size that has been used down to a level that will allow it to be cut off to fit...problem solved. I prefer the .7mm tip, but I share your reservation about availability of refills and to a lesser extent available colors...blue & black are good enough for me for color choices. I just viewed the video you referenced regarding the name change on the pen. I noticed in the comments that Will is "working on sourcing" the mini G2 refills. They can always be made from regular G2 refills, although that's somewhat tedious. It's not a deal breaker, so I'm still looking forward to what materials and pricing will be available.

While that is a solution, it's not really a good one to me. I'd have to do a good bit of writing before I could cut the refill. That means I'd either have to waste ink or use the refill normally in a different pen. That sort of defeats the purpose of EDC for me.

I'm plenty happy with my BAS. I don't think I need anything shorter.

FWIW, I have one of the 1st generation short bolt actions (the Slider) and it's my everyday desk pen, but is too long for comfortable pants pocket carry. I use it daily and love the option to use capless rollerball Schmidt refills (P8126). I had previously e-mailed Will Hodges about the possibility of of a future super short version of the bolt action. He would not comment via e-mail at the time, but I now presume he was already working on one, based on recent info. It will be on my short list if the price is not outrageous.

    See over yonder... ;)

    W/ the following related text:

Refill talk and the name for these new small pens is going to be the Bolt Action Mini (BAM) since they use the Pilot G2 Mini refills. I briefly talk about the refills that can be used in these pens, though I’ll be testing more and have a list next week when we launch these for sale next Wednesday. #hi #refills #tactileturnbam

Yes, it might not work for me...my EDC dictates a pen carried in LF pocket of pants or jeans & it looks like the bolt knob might interfere with clipping it in pocket or removing it. It also looks like the clip doesn't touch the pen body (might be the dark photography, though), which would be a deal-breaker. Sometimes pictures can be misleading, however..will wait to see more.

I have one of the Bolt Action Short, and the bolt doesn't get in the way when I clip it to my shirt or pants pocket. I think it's just the picture.

We were discussing the mini--not the short. As @TiBoy posted, there may be an issue with the bolt location. I'm waiting to see and find out more.

I understand what we're discussing, but, unless I'm mistaken, the bolt is located in the same position on all three lengths. The difference is the length of the pen below the clip, but the bolt is in the same place beside the clip on all three pens.

Looking at my Slider (now Bolt Action Short), that's not the case, but then the bolt mechanism was changed subsequent to my model. On my Slider the bolt head is located more to the offside of the clip, but the newer pens apparently have a slightly different location and as noted in @TiBoy's post, it may interfere.

They're out at a starting price of $99 for the baseline Ti Mini. FWIW, I have decided to pass on this offering as the price is not enticing and it's not available in a more utilitarian material like Stainless Steel...plus it looks like the bolt head would interfere with pocketing the pen in a jeans pocket. I'll stick with my current pens for now. Will's work is great, but ultimately, this one is not for me.
