There's an attitude test you have to pass every time you get pulled over certainly.

I regularly drive through said council estate at mental times of the night and occasionally have my collar felt by old bill. Usually nothing more than a kick around my van and a few questions and I'm on my way again :)

Bad planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on mine.

Stupidity should be illegal or painful.

Attitude test is a great opener...

However, you may come across the odd bored or pissed off cop who, even though it's blatantly obvious you're not out for B+E may still nick you for it because he can. Bad day at work, whatever.

Unfortunately, just because you've gotten away with it in the past, you may not in the future.

Not a criticism, trying to help :)

I respect the advice. Sadly I can't really odds it one of my customers is out that way and has a penchant for waking me at stupid early in the morning with obscenities

Then perfectly fine! I thought you meant going out in car/van without actually going to a job, say using it to visit a mate/go to pub/whatever, and still having tools on board.

    Ignore my last :)

Never!!! I spend far to much time in it as it is without using it for leisure.

Good advice none the less fella.

This is very true. In NYC there have been reports of people getting stopped for completely legal knives, issued citations and even told by the cop to just take it to court because it probably won't stick. Quotas.

If you can prove the need for it - as in the case of travelling directly to a customers house where you will need the item - then you are completely fine.

The problem would only occur if you were also using your van for personal/leisure stuff and carting around the tools where you don't need them - if you are driving over to visit a mate in the evening for example then you likely won't have any cause for carrying a crowbar, which is where the police would start asking questions.

I can't see an instance where I would do that however if I did I wouldn't be taking my tools out the van largely because I'm too idle.
