So I was at Cowboy Christmas in Las Vegas at the Venetian yesterday and walked into a vendor's booth.
This sounds like a lead in to a bad joke, it is not. Stay with me I am trying to make a point here.
I was wearing a black King Ropes ball cap, black Under Armour high crew shirt, black Klim jacket, earth tone 5.11 pants, black and grey hiking shoes with a small :censored: black fanny pack.
Now back to the booth. They sold saddles and other tack and the vendor lady looks up at me and says "you look like a knife and gun guy". I asked why she would say that? She replied " If you are not shot or killed in the first wave, I am going to stick to you like glue"
Now the point of my thesis.
I was not blending in. I was prepared, but it was obvious! This one moment now has me rethinking my entire philosophy on edc.
I am pleased to be a new member of edc forums and thank you for reading this.

    Welcome!

Quick story about blending in: I was planning for a trip to Europe. I didn't want to be singled out and bothered/stalked as an American, so I brought clothes with no words and bags with worldwide known manufacturers and I shut up unless I needed to communicate. It worked well. In Germany, Germans assumed I was German, even in tourist areas. I even made out well in Ireland, where I fooled American tourists into thinking I wasn't American at Blarney Castle.

When I got back, I went through everything and tried for a "greyman" approach. It's a journey, but you really get to have a reason to pour over gear and such to make sure it fits the profile you're going for. Nothing wrong with that, right?

sometimes i also feel this way. i live in a very small town, about 45 mins from the base in which i commute to daily. often, i have to run errands while in uniform (although its discouraged). i was waiting in line once at a small supermarket and a struck up a convo with a guy my age standing ahead of me. His main interest is where and when i was deployed, and if i was carrying a GUN? "No of course not!" (i CCW as soon as i leave the base). His reply... "Well i would if i where you, if i was a crazy madman and saw you in public, you prob would be targeted first..." Umm, ok.. my reply was "i signed up to serve my country, i would fight to my last breath for just one life to be saved." i think i took him of guard with my slightly aggravated tone. but he did thank me and let me go ahead of him......

Great Post! Welcome. I recently changed out backpacks for the exact same reason. I have a Maxpedition Condor pack that I have been carrying for the last couple years and just recently changed over to a more normal looking day pack. I had somewhat similar situation a few months back. A friend of mine made a comment jokingly saying " You look like your ready for war". That got me to thinking, if he thinks that maybe other people do too. I just tried to start thinking more about how I carry most of my EDC items. I carry all of the same items as before but now just in a different way.

Wearing a Molle backpack or similar wouldn´t be to even think of here in Sweden, then one really stand out and will get suspicous looks....

I use a NorthFace Surge 2 Charged, that is blending in some instead.... :)

I have changed over to a leather and canvas courier bag when out and about, dropped the 5.11 pants in favor of slacks or levis when home and all in all a more regular guy nothing to see here look. I also sport the occasional carry the calf in the snow at the ranch look. Very non tactical;)
