I just read about the Spyderco Wolfspy thats coming out this year, I didnt see any mention of it anywhere else yet. The info was released at blog.raymears.com, its a interesting design, but being a southpaw I dont see getting one.
Lol, just checked spyderco's website and its in the 2016 catalog....Next time I should google things before I post ;-P
Still undecided on this model, it looks a lot better in the catalog, I like the green G10 and the compression lock, I prefer a FFG though, I also understand that it will only be available through Ray Mears site so not sure how the shipping (EU) is going to be on it.
I forget if there is a link to Eric Glesser's SHOT 2016 video in this thread already, but he reveals some cool stuff. Think I'm going to hold out for a Manix 2 in blurple G10. Very cool.
Most of the Spyderco designs are ugly to me (still I'd like to try a Delica) but the Pattada is really appealing, not that I could afford it anytime soon. At least it's so big that I wouldn't edc it so it's not difficult to ignore it. If they'd make it with a 3"-3 1/4" blade on the other hand...
Adahn sir, THAT'S what made them Spyderco though!!! Back in the early 90's, late 80's...it was the most unsightly thing on a folder to have a hump with a hole in it. Then when you were showed the SpyderEdge, even more ugly it got. "Oh...it's one of those Spyder knives." was often heard. I appreciated the fact that you could tell the difference back then. Delica eh? One of my fave Spyderco's ever to this day.
My first Spyderco was a Clipit Rescue that my dad found in a melting snowbank. He was blown away when he held it up and I identified the make from across the room, but as you say, they were so distinctive (until two-dollar copies branded "Eagle" became available at every gas station and hardware store checkout counter). I actually liked that Spyderco. It wasn't as wide in the pocket as modern patterns of similar size, like the Endura, and the heavy spine all the way to the tip made it flick open like a dream. I EDCed it for a few years, but it was never my only knife. Serrated with no belly, it simply didn't serve as a primary cutter for me. I carried it for cutting rope and other things I didn't want to do with a fine edge of easy-to-dull 400 series stainless. I gave it to my sister when she went off to College so she would have a large folder she wouldn't need to sharpen. No other spydie I've tried has felt quite as handy, though. In fact, I really shouldn't post in this thread, because I'm just not a fan. I'll edit this post in a little while with pics of my current Spydie inventory, though, so that I'm not too far off-topic. EDIT my spydies:
I thought Spydercos were ugly too, and some of them definitely still are, but they are so comfortable to hold and use, and they perform so well, that it is definitely worth the ugliness.
And now Benchmade even has at least one (that I know of) knife with the hump and a hole... I saw a review or something (here on edcf) of a newish BM wherein the hole was even referred to as a "Spydie hole". I wonder if the Glassers (pere et fils) noticed that...! L'chaim Moshe ben David
Hey edjo69 bro! Naw...I don't think it's opened all the way. If it had that angle, either Mr. Ayoob, Mr. Schempp, or myself had a hand in designing it. Good to see you! Be safe!
MTFatboy Great story! Was it the SS handled version or the FRN Rescue? Agree with you on the "SpyderEdge"...it just keeps cutting. How do you like that ClipiTool BTW? (I am SO glad they put a clip on that one!) Be safe!
I think I remember reading that this was a thing between BM and Spyderco at some point. I think the trademarks ran out and BM started using it, and Spyderco asked nicely and they worked out a deal or some such. But yeah, if/when I spring for a Mini-Grip, I'm waiting on the G-10/20v version of the 555HG. I see it for pre-order in some places already.
