Any special snow shoveling techniques you guys may have?

I have googled enough to know to shovel little at a time, take breaks, and stretch. But I am left wondering there's got to be some magical way to better clear snow.

I'm from Northern Mn. and am 67 yrs old. The things you mentioned are spot on, but my friend, without the aid of a snowblower, there ain't no magic for the kind of snow you're getting. Best method by far is to go out every couple hours and remove the snow in increments rather than wait for the end and kill yourself. Makes life a lot easier and probably longer. Good luck out there.

always thought one of these would work nicely, but never worked up the nerve to actually buy one. Tomorrow I will head out with a shovel and dig out my car.

Occaisionally spray a light coat of WD-40 on each side of your shovel. Also, bend at the knees, and not only at your waist. If you're able to switch hands, then that avoids overloading the muscles on one side of your body. Drink plenty of liquids because you'll likely be sweating quite a bit but not realize it.

Also cold weather increases your risk of heart attack or stroke so don't push it if you're at risk. As for shoveling tips, what they^ said.

Shovel before it's walked on and clear to the edges of the sidewalk.

Dinosaurs invented duct tape and motorized vehicles.... and cameras... and dancing badly on film.... way before humans were around.

it's a fact, so say the internet.

I worked on a snow making crew one winter in high school and we used flame throwers to de-ice the snow gun nozzles. Flames, snowmobiles, and a free season pass. Fun times! ;)

I don't really shovel as much as I plow. I first run my shovel down the middle of my driveway. Then starting on one side, I hold the end of the shovel with both hands, and line up in the snow so that three quarters of the shovel from the right side is in the snow. I then plow to the grass and then move back and start the next line.

This is pretty much what I do for the driveway, except I take a little bit out of one side and then plow across to the grass on the other side. Walk back, take another little bit out of the far side, then set the shovel 3/4 of the way into the snow and push across again. It was tough yesterday because our snow was wet and heavy, so I was only taking about 1/2 to 1/4 of the shovel per pass, but it still worked.

Oh, Dorian, I do have Mr. Plow... My neighbor across the street has an old '80s Blazer with a plow. My folks and I refer to it as Homer, because for a while he used to keep a stuffed Homer Simpson doll sitting in the front seat when he wasn't using it. Every time it snows, he plows the road in front of his property, my parent's property and the properties a few houses up and down the street from us. It's so awesome since I don't have to worry about clearing street parking spots or clearing the spot in front of the mailbox. My Mom usually send over cookies as a thank you.

Another big tip is to use your vehicles strategically. Park them in ways that lessen the amount of snow needed to shovel. Part of my family's driveway is dirt, so we park two vehicles over that so we don't have to worry about shoveling up dirt as much.

The two biggest shoveling tips? Take small bites and lift with the knees. When the snow is high, don't put the shovel on the ground, take little bites out of the pile of snow until you get to the ground. When the snow is heavy, don't overload the shovel. We had the heaviest snow this time... just had to do it in little bits and be patient. They say not to throw the snow with your shovel, but I do this all the time. You just need to use short, quick movements with your arms and be careful where you throw it (not to far and not near anything you don't want to hit with snow).
