In my opinion, small fixed blades are not necessarily the most useful day-to-day type of knife. Folders are far more practical for many tasks that don't involve materials that would gunk up the frame or locking mechanism. Where I think small fix blades beat folders is in outdoor tasks like hunting and fishing. I wouldn't use any of my folders while hunting or fishing for fear of the clean up afterwards, whereas my small fixies where meant as backup for those specific tasks. A knife as a tool while tooling about town, folder. A knife for the great outdoors, fixed blade. I base the size of either knife type on the likely task.

Some people's day-to-day may be on par with your outdoor tasks. we have to keep in mind that we have members from many different backgrounds and walks of life.

You also have to keep in mind the foibles of modern knife laws. In some places (such as NYC and Germany), small, locking folders are either illegal or banned by de facto enforcement. However, small fixed blades are legal.

There could be many reasons a person would prefer a small fixed blade over a folding pocketknife.

My mistake. I should have said in my experience where I wrote "in my opinion". I do not doubt the diversity of background or experience of members on this or any board. My own experience ranges from soldier to assembly line worker to office goon... I was attempting to offer an opinion based on my experience and apologize if I came off as pontificating. Please take my comments as a viewpoint from where I live, work and recreate.

I got this and some other knives as a gift from a reader of my blog. Haven't tested it very much yet but so far I' really liking it.

I'd have to agree with you. Although I have recently switched to fixed knives only I've noticed two things... in general they are much bulkier because not only do you have a knife that's long compared to a folder, but you also must carry it in a sheath.... where in a folder you could keep just naked in your pocket... it to mention where to store the sheath and the scared :censored: issue

Where I think personally think fixed knives has the edge is aesthetic... I find folders pretty boring imho and the natural materials on fixed knives are better... and I own some really nice fixed and folders (Chris Reeves's, spyderco, fellhoelter etc)... also fixed knives are harder use knives even when they're small... I guess I'd compare it to the discussion on carrying wheel gun versus pocket pistol... both have their merits

I don't have many pocket sized knives. I have the EsKabar and really like it. I also had an ESEE Izula 2 but sold it, I liked the blade on the EsKabar better. That TOPS Ute above looks really handy. Also MistWalker/Brain Griffin's Tibo knife looks really good. For me, when I go small I usually opt for a folder.

This is my fav small fixed:
