My pleasure! I don't think I went back to everything I missed, but I've been trying to catch up. I've pretty much been MIA since moving in the new house. Crazy busy! Things are finally starting to settle down a little...I think.
Received the table for my bandsaw in the mail yesterday. Decided I had to paint it! It is made by a company called swag offload. They make a lot of stuff for Jeeps. But they also make this. Pretty cool. also got some belts for the belt sander: and last but not least, some bullets for the bullet throwers!
I love how all those little touches of orange you've placed on your tools just make your workbenches look so much cooler. It's like it went from utilitarian to chill work space with just a few splashes of paint. That band saw table looks hot with that touch of orange.
Nice table! Probably needless to say I'm even more jealous, but also happy for you! That setup should serve you well. What is that black paint you are using? It's remarkable how evenly it seems to be coating--are you using a compressor and an airbrush?
Thank you again! As for the paint, rustoleum spray paint! I actually have not done as good a job as I could, mostly because I was impatient and just wanted to get it painted and get it together! There are some flaws that you can't see in the pics...but honestly, for the most part, it does a good job and goes on evenly if you take your time, and doesn't drip. Conversely, if you rush, and put on too much, you get a drip....duh! I am not going to redo it, as these are tools, and though I have a nice aesthetic, I mostly painted the table and the grinder because they were raw metal, and they would eventually start to show rust. As for the use of a compressor, I have been interested in doing powder coating, and cerakote or duracoat for awhile, so who knows, that may be next!
Thank you so much. I wanted to pull it in to the overall theme, but didn't want it to have too much orange. I like the way it turned out!
Well, after perusing MTFatboy's thread and his upcoming knife making adventures, I felt inspired to post my first concept drawing. It is truly difficult to come up with something original, but I am gonna try! This is going to change again before I put it to steel and get cutting/grinding. I saw a video that suggested you cut out your design in wood to get an idea of how it is going to feel in the hand. So I just did that tonight. Here is what I have been doing so far. Oh and BTW MTFatboy, I am not going to have the fancy steel you are using! Went with some 1084 and 01 tool steel to start. first drawing is the shorter line inside. after cutting it out to this, I decided the handle needed to be longer: But i still like this shorter design... Next I cut out the other design and pasted it to some scrap wood and cut it out with the bandsaw I want some sort of guard/choil between the handle and the blade, hence that protrusion. But I'm not sure I like the way this looks, so it may either shorten, be redesigned or removed. Not sure yet. I would really like to make a cool folder, but I think that is more of an advanced knife making skill. So it makes sense to start with fixed. The grinder is not up and running yet. Having some issue with belt tracking but have been working through them with Chris Williams, the builder. Should have a solution NLT tomorrow! Oh, and comments and suggestions from all you knife aficionados is encouraged and appreciated!
Nice! You could always get a slotted, machined, pin-on type guard from Jantz or Crazy Cow if that integral guard winds up being too much trouble to have when you're grinding and shaping. You could give it the same cant and contour. Also, you could lengthen the first a little by trimming the end of the pommel down to a post and adding a thick pommel to it (or cutting it down to a 3/4 tang and making a longer handle).
Thanks for the input. I am not a fan of the add on guard...I never think that they look very good. I am going to play around with the wood model using the dremel to see if I come up with a better shape. And go back to the pencil/pad and do some mods.
Today I made my vertical grinder into a horizontal grinder by making my own 'flipping plate' as Chris Williams calls them. vertical: Horizontal
