Yup, a photojournalist for the last 50 years, although I do other stuff from time to time. Are you a photographer too?

Maybe it's something in the eyes? That mix of cynicism and world weariness which only the long term PJ can achieve. I aspire to that! :)

After the army I did 2 years running a photo lab, a decade of wedding photography (for my sins) and now three years of running 3 repro studios for a museum as well as running the art department and teaching photography at a local school. :) Did a bit of catering in between while I was apprenticing. We're in the middle of condensing our studios into one big one which is being built as we speak, exciting times, finally a department I can run from one place. I still run my own projects as well, the hobby side of the profession.

Those of us who make a living from photography in this day and age are truly thankful. It's a tough tough world out there for pro photographers isn't it? I'm going to be advertising for an afternoon shift at the studio in a weeks time. Like last time I advertised, every single applicant will be more (academically) qualified than me. Tough out there.

LOL! Almost every photojournalist does some wedding photography in the course of the "career." It's a form of payback for the privilege of a ringside seat at the Great Parade. Actually, I enjoyed doing the occasional wedding, no doubt because I didn't work too many of them, but years have passed and I'm no longer up for that job. So far, the times and I are in synch; print photojournalism and I are declining at about the same rate. I used to teach photography classes, but much of my non-photography time these days is spent speaking to groups about historical events and notable persons whom I had been in the presence of. My only contact with academia is as a provider of archival material.
I've been lucky. It may be hard to believe, but when I first got into photography as an occupation, there were more job openings available than people to fill them. My deepest sympathies go to all young PJs (except for their youth.) Annie Leibowitz, one of the best and well recognized photogs in the world, gave up PJ work, at which there were none better, because she couldn't make a living at it and turned to celebrity portrait :censored: because that's where the money was.

BTW, my world weary eyes notwithstanding, I am not in the least cynical from all that. I got to watch history in the making, and frankly, was much impressed. It's like being present in the control room of human events, and if you are doing your job right, participating in the process (in a small way, I'm not delusional, but consider the flag raising on Iwo Jima photo. It had and after many decades still has lasting impact, and so have other photographs of people and events, even those not remembered.)

Can't say I'm an optimist, but I think most people want to do the right thing. Hardly anyone gets up in the morning wondering what to do to make the world worse. That gives us at least a chance to get it right.

Me in Glenrowan. I don't get why Ned Kelly is so popular? He was an outlaw? When did people stop hating the police?

    Nice pose!
Well we are a country mostly descendant from convicts.;)
I reckon one in three people will tell you they are distantly related to Ned Kelly.

I think Doraemon's referring to the prevailing theory that 8% of the men in Asia are direct male-line descendants and carry the mighty Khan's Y-Chromosome.

That is why you are such a bunch of nice guys ! My old roomates in London were all Kangaroo Mikes. (four Michaels in one house..) Hard working, laid back , party hard and screw the Man. They could go on and on about Ned Kelly. And two actually were convinced they are related. Blessed be Ned Kelly ! Wheel gun and a bullet proof pot on the head... just cool mate!
