My Bernie Garland's Woodlore knife complete review.

This is one of only two "mammoth & damascus steel" handmade Woodlore knife, designed and made by Mr. Bernie Garland of England.
The knife was commissioned to Mr. Garland in 2007. I own it from 2011. It still carries the engravings of past owner's family crest/name on one side of the blade, and Garland's signature on the other side. The knife has never been resharpened, received only a couple of gentle strops from me, to refresh the razor sharp edge (that shave hairs).
This is a totally handmade craft item, thought and realized to be a working knife.

The contoured handle scales are made of stabilized mammoth teeth, in a beautiful rose color that my pics aren't able to render.
Stabilization of materials hardens and ensures stops cracking, swelling, shrinking and colour change and fading.
The stabilized materials become impervious to water, oils, liquids and temperature shocks.

The blade is 113mm (4.50") in length and 26mm (1.0") at the widest point.
The knife is a full tang with 2 loveless birdseye brass handle bolts & one brass pin holding everything together.
Handle length is 113mm (4.50") making this knife totally 226mm (9") in length.

The blade is from 4mm stock B.S.01 type high carbon steel from Sheffiled, 11 cm. (4,50") long.
    Typical analysis of steel: carbon 0.95% silicon 0.30% manganese 1.25% , chromium 0.50%, tungsten 0.50%, vanadium 0.25%.
The blade is heat treated in furnace and then tempered and drawn to 58/59 RC tested.
It has been ground with scandinavian type single bevels and stropped to razor sharp edge.
Damascus bolster complete the handle; the whole handle is set on the tang with epoxy resin and fixed through 2 loveless type birdeye brass handmade bolts, with brass center and a lanyard hole.

The sheath is made from handworked wet formed/friction fit overlapped leather with belt loop, in a conker dark brown. Sheat is wetformed 50% and friction 50% for a tight durable fit. The leather used is 3,5 mm thick veg dark tanned type, with a massive 6 mm leather central spacer, for an overall thickness of approx. 14 mm down the stitch side of the sheath.
The leather is glued and double hand stitched.

From the following two pics you can easily see the rough craft machining of the contour of the blade.
That's why i said that this a beautiful knife but also a working tool.

    The tipped blade's end.

When not in use (i carry it during spring/summer or for short trips), i use to cover the knife with a film of Renaissance wax and the sheat - well dryied - with natural grease.

What more to say ? Nothing, except that i love this knife.

The first one I pretty much have on my all the time on the boat, it has a sheepsfoot blade, a shackle opener, and marlinspike. Always helps, great size, and it glows in the dark! Made by Wichard. I carry the Gerber Crucial when I coach a lot, and also racing. I love the pliers and strap cutter, and the blade is a sheepsfoot as well. The second knife is my Merychin. This is used mainly for racing, sometimes carried for coaching. Only carried when the wind cranks up, and it starts to hit the fan. Emergencies only..
