It really is! It might not look like much, and the sheath is not the best, but it is a great knife for whittling wood, cutting anything from twine to vines, gutting fish, preparing food ... in general, most tasks you will regularly do on a typical camping/hiking/canoeing trip. It features a decent blade steel, a very useful and versatile blade shape, a very good grind for most outdoors tasks and an ugly, but quite comfortable handle. It is to small to be very good for chopping and the heaviest wood working tasks, and the relatively thin blade and short tang means you should not baton this knife. On the other hand, you should really try to avoid doing that to any knife. Personally, I prefer a larger blade (5"-7") in an allround outdoors knife. I am also quite fond of wooden handles and metal bolsters, and I do prefer a laminated steel like Helle's. Truth to be told, though, the humble Mora could probably handle most tasks I would throw at it in a typical day in the woods. As a cheap backup or beater knife, it just cannot be beaten, especially not for the money. I own a couple of beautiful Norwegian knives (Helle and Brusletto),and these are my go to knives for outdoors activities. However, I still keep a Mora Companion in the skiff for gutting fish, cutting fishing line and rope etc. Despite the hostile environment (damp, salty air, temperature swings etc.) it is holding up great, and I never need to be afraid of getting it dirty.
Finally pulled the trigger on something I've been thinking about for a while. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
