Wasn't an issue, just kept wiggling the scales gently back and forth until both sides came apart easily. As far as the new scales, line up the lanyard hole with the spacer and use a soft faced mallet. Firm tap and it snapped right into place.

I have one, as well. Excellent knife. I also thought the stock scales could be improved upon.

Since we're talking about it, I too decided to replace the scale on my Southard. To this day, still one of my favorites. [IMG]

I really wanted to like my Southard, just didn’t work for me and ended up giving it away.

Just out of curiosity, what did you not like about it?

And if you are going to give away expensive stuff you don't like, how can we become better friends?

Same here. The flipping action was subpar to my liking. Not that I need a flipper, but if a knife is a flipper I expect a light switch, like the ZT 0450.

I’m really not sure, I was excited about picking one up. Right at first I didn’t like the action it was a little rough but with a lot of knifes they open up after a few weeks of working the action but the Southand never smoothed out. The stock clip was lacking and changed it out to a nice Ti deep carry clip. I just found that I was not carrying it much and she dropped out of rotation. Nothing wrong with that great looking designed knife it was just not for me so one of my little brothers was gifted another knife that didn’t make the cut.

Ah, I see. I got used to the action and was able to flip it well enough, but you are right that it isn't as snappy as other flippers. Thanks for the response!
