Looking like a really good start, esp. considering your equipment The gap you have on your orange scale could be fixable without sanding down the middle area by heating the hole scale and laying it flat for cooling. I would try to "cook" it for some minutes and then lay it on a flat surface, like glass, or leave it in the pot of flat enough. I'd try boiling water first because with a heat gun you could accidently melt the material or get discolorations or warpages. Maybe next time when you drill the holes first you can try the "easy way" to shape you slabs with just simply get the rough contours withouth the liners, but the fine sanding while screwed on the liners. This way you can also remove scratches from rough grinding that you find on some knives' liners (speaking about you, RAT2). Just be careful at the locking liner... Waiting for your progress
Yes, my equipment is probably rudimentary compared to actual craftsmen!! But, It is working for me! LOL! Thanks for the tip. This first scale has been a learning experience for me. I made some mistakes, and will definitely do things differently on my next project!! All things considered, I am pleased and am enjoying the process! Thanks for the comments!
Nice pic I've done the same with my CRYO, except I just took out the blade (removed the thumb studs) and then put the knife back together with a placeholder for the blade and to keep the lock bar in "open" position. Stonewashed it with all screws in, just took off the clip, but washed all hardware at once. Gives more grip and looks more interesting than before Someday I might throw it in the tumbler again when I'm working on de-assisting it...
By the way, my first scale attempt was for a SRM 710, Teak wood. Gave shape, tried to drill the holes, wood cracked, ready for the trash box But I think I still have it, maybe I can take a shot at the weekend. Believe me, you're not alone
Kirinite / moonglow comparison. Not as bright, but not bad, considering kirinite is about 1/2 the price!
Final pics, maybe I'll add a false edge someday and get round-head screws for the backside, but for now it's my edc knife and I like it a lot. Summer sunshine is the nicest light for photoes I think, details come out much nicer as with my unprofessional light at home:
okay, here are the pics of my (almost) finished scales. I still have a minor modification to make, and I have a question for the experts! How do I fix blade play/centering? Overall I am extremely pleased! It has been an excellent learning experience, and I have a renewed respect for the real craftsmen out there! When something is custom/hand made, it takes time, attention to detail and I truly understand and support why this type of work is somewhat expensive, and why it can take time to arrive, when ordered!! I enjoyed this project and look forward to the next one!
It's called Juma. I get it from a billiard supply company, besides knife scales they make it for use on cue sticks too. It comes in "solid" colors like - gray, green, orange, ivory and black. It also comes in what they call their "exotic colors" like - golden dragon, red carnelian and this one.....ivory snake.
that is sooooo cool, i might have to order the black and make a set of scales for my resilience or for my BK24. my only concern is what does the material feel like, is it grippy, smooth or kinda in between?
I put every scratch, dent, and blade ding in that fixed personally. [/url]mumbo dumpo 4_5_14 by mumbojumboo, on Flickr
Thank you! I've been looking for something different to work with lately, and this definetally looks like something to try.
Ahhhh, that explains why i have never been able to find the stuff through the regular channels. Nice way to source cool materials from unexpected outlets., a sign of a true innovator
I have found a source for thermite $45/ griptilian $TBA/ 0566 $65 scales in orange, blue, green, grey, blue/black, black g10, and micarta,... all free shipping. you can get them plain, v pattern, hex or reverse hex milled. I have a plain black coarse g10 on the way for the thermite,... I have neither the skill or the funds to become proficient in making my own,... supporting craftsmen I suppose. cryo is supposed t be available shortly too here are examples of the color/ pattern options
