I recently got motivated to work on an old M4 and M3 I had in my stash.

The M4 just needs a new set of handle slabs, but the M3 needed a new guard and pommel as well as grips, so I started on it first.

This is the (Carbon steel) guard (1/8") and pommel (3/16") roughed out and fitted to the blade, all laying on the slab of wood I'm using for the grips. (repro leather sheath is from Camillus, had two of them in my parts box)

I used a router bit chucked in my mill to inlet the slabs... first time trying it this way but it turned out great.

They are still way too thick, so I'll take about 3/16" off each side.

Here the slabs have been slimmed, and the guard and pommel are finished. Next is to shape the handle and put it all together.

Haven't had a lot of time to work on these the past many weeks, just a little here and there, but.....

    Progress!

Still a lot of sanding to go, then stain/finish.

I still have a bit more sanding around the pommel on the M3, but now, the question is: To groove, or not to groove?

    M4 Example:

Looking 'sharp' without the grooves; but I'd still go groovy!

Took a little off the rexford rut v3. Also rounded off the edges, much more comfortable and pockets better as well. Mirror polished the screws and torched the blade. Then had the whole thing reblasted by REK.

It's great you put so much effore into such an expensive knife to chamfer the edges, shouldn't it be that way right away?
And even though that blade looks sick but I guess after torching it you can only use it for photo shoots as it will dull from looking at it.
Better to bronze or blue the screws even though that will fade away after a while.

To be honest, it took about 10 minutes to grind and torch. But I agree, I also found it was pretty pokey in the pocket too. These lenox titanium coated blades take some very cool colors, but also don't dull after torching. Using this one for about a week now, cuts like.... a razor.

Torching the screws on higher end knives IMO makes em look a bit cheap, prefer just mirrored. Also was matching up my other daily carry.

However, on other modifications like my auto divot tools below (made by GT Knives) I torched it all! As well as a few timascus pieces I made for them. But there I was purposely trying to match blues and bronzes.

Are those glow in the dark screws at the base of the handle/scales?

(Yes I realize this is a 3+ year old post but this thread is my "I can't sleep" thread.)

Thank you, I keep trying to pick up on the subtle differences in canvas vs linen vs denim vs burlap in these pics but it's hard to tell... Or maybe that's just my inexperience.

    PM incoming btw.
