I'm in Italy, and looking for a shoulder bag to hold my stuff. I don't want to carry anything in my pockets due to the pickpocketing here.

Phone, slim wallet, keys, passports, and the stuff normally in a maxpedition pocket organizer (boo boo kit, light, tweezers, clippers, meds).

I'm thinking Maxpedition neat freak, but it might be too big and have too many pockets and slots.

Being able to attach a water bottle for travel would be great too.

    Zimm,
what about a PacSafe bag? They are very resistant to theft and come in a variety of sizes.

I like the Chio bag from Alpha One Niner. It doesn’t have a water bottle attachment point, but I can fit a bottle inside.

So it sounds like you want small and water bottle attachment, a little harder to find. Helikon Tex EDC side bag, compact shoulder bag (not on US site yet) and Tom Bihn small shoulder bag. The EDC side bag is the only one I mentioned that is ready for water bottle on the outside.

I also had to move from a small backpack to a shoulder bag to carry my extended EDC in a more public-friendly way (as may wife used to say), for example when eating at a restaurant.

I doubt it will fit the typical high standards for Italian outfits, but being a German pragmatic I've settled with a VAUDE Ayo S; there are also M and L sizes available. The Wista series would be another option.

I like it for its (small) size, rain resistance and grey man style  and it's usually filled with:
    • 0,33L water bottle
    • wind or rain jacket
    • EDC pouch
    • Trauma kit (SOFT-T TQ, chest seal, mylar blanket, small trauma sheers, CPR mask)
    • N95 mask
    • gloves
    • base cap
    • sunglasses
    • small USB power bank with micro USB/USB C cables
    • Lumintop Tool AA 2.0 flashlight
    • paper tissues and wet wipes
    • small deodorant
While all the first-line EDC (smartphone, wallet, keys) are kept in my trouser pant pockets.

If I need to go even more light-weight I carry a Samsonite Trunk & Co. fanny pack as a cross-body bag; it just contains the first-line EDC and the EDC pouch.

What type of water bottle, because the size of that would determine a lot.

I want to carry a man bag or murse or whatever, think they would be handy and functional, but haven’t been able to get past the image thing. I’m confident enough to do it but haven’t made the jump yet, one day, maybe.

If I were to choose a small shoulder bag, it would be from Tom Bihn or NutSac. They both have options that would work for my purpose.

Well I decided to order a nutsac MBD (Man Bag, Dammit!). Checks all the boxes except for the water bottle. I'll give it try. Never carried a bag before, but the majority of men here in town do. I definitely felt and looked way awkward carrying a Rush 12 backpack on my first city trip. Plus I can't tell if people are rummaging through it while wearing. With a man bag, I can keep an arm on it while on the train or a bus.

I also plan to put zipper pulls on it because I like the zipper pull threading trick to keep pickpockets at bay in a high threat environment.

Good list! I'm also going to carry a USB power bank, flash light, wipes, and a few disposable masks since they're required to go anywhere around here.

I’m still at that point with bum bag/fanny pack. Can’t wait for Autumn so I can wear coats which gives me extra pockets!

Sweet! Let us know how you like the nutsac. I've long wanted one but the lack of pistol pouch has deterred me. I know their new tac line accommodates that but I do not like the messenger flap style closure at all.

Enjoying my Hill People Gear Belt Pack very much![IMG][IMG]
