here today I come to this post to ask you guys whats the best brand and round for your home defense situation
    and why?

I'm here soaking up your info to learn a little bit more on shotgun ammo.

    Give us your Feedback.

so far these are the four ammo types I'm leaning to
    Winchester 12 ga. 3" Super-X [IMG][IMG]

these military grade 00 buck [IMG]

    PremiumĀ® Personal DefenseĀ® 00Buck [IMG]

    Winchester PDX1 12 Defender (12 gauge) [IMG]

give your feedback and for other to also learn.

If you're worried about over penetration (which is definitely a concern when letting go with a load of 12 ga. in the confines of a house or apartment), I'd say three rounds of bird shot backed by five rounds of 00. IMHO the best of both worlds. Also check out the penetration tests on YOU TUBE.

I made a decision to focus on #1 buck for the 12ga and #3 buck for the 20 ga. That's just me and I based that on a very unscientific test on cardboard from the varying distances which are typically associated with the interior of a home.

My HD shotgun is a 20ga Weatherby pump

I use #1 buck in the 12. And federal personal protection in the 20.And my opinion is slugs do not belong in a shotgun, use a rifle.

Federal LE holds the tightest pattern. Personally, I'm not a big fan of a pump shotgun for home defense.

I have one of my 12ga loaded with Centurion Buck and Ball (68 cal round ball and 6 #1 buck - kind of the predecessor to the Winchester PDX 1) and another with Winchester Ranger 00 buck with 4 Ranger Slugs in the Speedfeed stock. I've been happy with both.

My home defense situation would be vastly different from yours or anyone else and articulating mine would be a disservice to you. What is YOUR home defense "situation?"

Federal Flite Control #1 Buck. Very accurate with nice patterning out as far as I need it to be, has a good reputation among LE agencies who spend a lot of time testing such things and isn't overly expensive.

Sometimes I'll order the bulk boxes, but normally I just grab a few of the 5 round boxes everytime I'm in my local shop (for ~$3/box).

I keep our 20ga loaded with #4 buck. Devastating on gallon milk jugs full of water ;) and hopefully great at discouraging folks with ill intent.

+1 on the #4. Any major brand will work.

I just buy whatever double ought buck is cheapest, because patterning at 5 yards isn't a Huge concern.

Of course my home defense rig is a handgun with a surefire flashlight and electronic ear muffs.

Clearing a house with a two handed weapon is a chore. Firing a shotgun indoors will also make you think twice about ever wanting to do it again.

I'd like to have #1 but I've never seen it in stores. I only ever see 00 and occasionally #4, so the HD shotgun is loaded with 00 Federal Flite-Control, which was recommended by an instructor and patterned well for HD with my gun.

I would recommend heading over to the Box 'o Truth and looking at the penetration/overpenetration tests for shotgun ammo. They are enlightening.

I've had very good luck with Estate OO buckshot. Patterns well, and is readily available. Seems like good ammo to me.

Federal Flite control or Winchester Low Recoil 00 buck. No need for slugs indoors, and bird shot is for birds.
At 5 feet, bird shot might be ok as a fightstopper. At 5 yards, it could be different. I have witnessed a rabid animal shot in the head at 10 feet with #8 ,and it survived. Kinda ruled it out for self defense.
I have a shotgun loaded for self defense, but my go to weapon is a AR-15 loaded with frangible ammo.

Fed flite control for buck, and breneke slugs.

Ive yet to find a gun the wont work well with

For social work, nothing smaller than #1 buck.
I like to have some slugs WITH THE GUN (not in it) because while it doesnt make it into a rifle, im still more than comfortable putting it to work at 100yd.

If you want to get radical in your house, alternate 00 and slugs in your magazine.

I dunno about buckshot but the #8 target ammo from Estateis problematic in my gun (Remington 870), brass seems to be weak at the rim and bends rather than comply with extraction. Range guy told me it was common.

YMMV of course, just something to be watchful for.
