I understand that about reliance, but that's what redundancy is for. A traditional compass round the neck (and the knowledge to use it) will always be there, but one on the wrist is handy for a quick check!
That's the reason I was looking into getting a "multifunction" watch for SAR. I could get a quick n' dirty idea of what I'm doing and then use the "real" compass and stuff when necessary.
You can not go wrong with Casio G-Shocks but I myself prefer a Suunto which are top of the range. I have a Vector & must say I'm very happy with it.
