A friend as been bringing a Gerber Camping Axe with him lately, and it's pretty lightweight and easy to use.
Does anyone have opinions on other light weight axes, or "pocket saws"? It has to be light enough and small enough to pack, yet be able to cut through large branches(not logs), maybe 5" thick? Pieces too large to snap or jump on.
I watched the review on CC for the Gerber saw, it looks like it went through that wood a little too easy, and I'd use it for pieces a bit larger around, too.

Have a look here - everything from the Hand Hatchet to the Small Forest Axe could fit the bill.

Don't bother with Gerber, Fiskars is exactly the same thing but a whole lot cheaper, I picked up mine under $15.

As far as saw goes, Bahco Laplander is one of the best folding saws available, but if you want something bigger, check out Trailblazer Sawvivor.

Gransfors is good stuff, but very $$$$$.

Yeah, actually, Fiskars owns Gerber. So it IS exactly the same. I have a $10 Fiskars folding saw. It works great for me. I've heard one of the best saws though is this: http://www.silkysaws.com/

I REALLY love the sound of the Survival Saw from goinggear, that looked just about perfect. Small and light enough to pack, and with a few minutes of work, it could get through a large piece of wood.
Any opinions on that guy?? I watched all the youtube vids I could find of it, it looks great.

I have the Pocket Chainsaw. It comes with the handles shown in the picture (used with a stick through the end fitting or with separate plastic and rope handles (which do not fit inside the can). It's quite handy in that, not only does it fold up very small for storage, but you can saw things difficult to get at with a hand saw. The Pocket Chainsaw brand cuts in both directions as opposed to similar saws that only cut in one direction. I can cut through a 5" diameter limb, tree, whatever, in about 3 minutes.

If you do want to try a light hatchet/axe, take a look at the SOG tomahawk. Moderately useful around camp and a great weapon. Be very careful with short axes/hatchets, however. Probably the most dangerous camping/woodsman's tools around. Can't tell you how many times I've seen someone mis-hit a piece of wood - too flat strike angle - and the blade glances off into their foot, leg or knee.

In my experience, you are better off with a saw than an axe. I used to recommend the sawvivor, but I like this one much better.

Thanks saniteerra, I think I'll try one of those. If it doesn't work out, I'll ask for a saw or axe for Christmas!

In my limited, many years of camping experience.
    You need:

    an ax to split wood
    an ax to hammer stakes
a saw to fell (the hand chain seems pretty cool. Never used it though)
a machete to clear, and cut small brush.

I don't use this but it seems like a good if pricey machete:
    woodsman's pal

those three things and you can do anything. :whisper: :juggle: :lecture:

Bark River makes a very nice looking camp axe. Bark River makes quality tools and it's a great way to support the forum.

I'm sure Jon could order one for you but if for some reason he can't, they are available at Knives Ship Free.

For that much you might as well just get a gransfors, which is a bit more than half that price.

I saw this in the past. I love the video. :luck:

    pocket chain saw

Sharpened up my machetes this week after reading this. Got me in the mood. It is fun to clear some brush sometimes. I am going to order a woodsman's pal. seems like a good product.

Re: Recommend me a light weight camping axe or saw

It really looks like a Supreme Pocket Chainsaw and the Sven Saw type saw are right up my ally, they are more of what I'm looking for.
For me, it would take just as long to hack with a hatchet as it would to use a hand saw, to get through something, I think. And since they're so small and light weight, a hand saw and pocket saw would make the most sense to me.
Thanks a bunch guys, my price range on this was about $30, so I can't even look at Bark River stuff!
